Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner to retire after 2020 season. O’Conner spent 28 years with MiLB office, 38 years working in pro ball. The 11th MiLB prez, O’Conner’s office might be eliminated during ongoing negotiations between MLB and MiLB. Twitter
ESPN wrote a story on how the current minor league baseball system is about to end:
There will be only 120 affiliated teams, four per major league team. At least 42 teams will lose their affiliations, while some independent teams could become affiliates. Minor league owners don't know which teams are on the cut list.
There will no longer be rookie and short-season Class A levels. Lower-level players will train in their major league club's spring training facilities in Arizona or Florida, but scores of paying jobs in the game will be lost.
MLB will take over merchandising, broadcast and sponsorship rights, splitting revenues 50-50 with the minor league clubs.

The MLB plan to reduce affiliated teams from 160 to 120 is going to happen. MiLB headquarters in St. Pete will be shuttered and the leagues will be run from MLB headquarters in NYC. There are still a couple of big issues...
On a traditional year, the Cape Cod League would draw the cream of the talent during the off season. The Cape league is canceled this year and top players have flocked to the Northwood Leagues.

Carson Seymour, Kansas State RHP
Prospects Live’s #40 draft prospect, Seymour put up an 18:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 19.2 innings across five starts. He had the most impressive raw velocity of any pitcher I saw, holding 94-96 MPH into the middle innings, but he wasn’t really overpowering hitters. It’s more of a sinker profile, not the type of heater conducive to racking up whiffs despite the above-average velocity. Seymour’s curveball was his go-to secondary and flashed above-average, but its shape was inconsistent, getting a bit slurvy at times. He was around the strike zone, but it’s more of a control-over-command profile. I think he’s probably a reliever long-term.

Castillo has been on the #PGJC radar for some time now. Has always had power stuff with the ability to miss bats; if he’s around the plate more he’ll be on the MLB Draft radar next spring.

The new draft date opens up that chance for a good handful of new players. John Rhodes from Kentucky, Peter Hansen from Texas, Jerrion Ealy from Ole Miss, Dawson Netz from Arizona could all be guys who jump way up.

Edwin Arroyo is the top Puerto Rican prospect for a reason. Tooled up across the board, fast run with a good arm and a smooth swing as a switch hitter. 2 hits in-game, including a nicely hit opposite-field line drive off a JPS heater.

Wow on minor league contraction. Those are big numbers of teams and jobs to be lost. I imagine COVID revenue losses aren't helping in that regard.

Right now the minor league teams are just trying to stay afloat for COVID losses. They were going to fing the contraction. Now they are just fighting to survive. Don't worry. In a year or two, MLB will expand. A number of the contracted cities will get new franchises. In addition, J-Rod will be owners and MLB pitching will be further diluted! MLB will need 7 inning games, free runners on 2nd base in extras, and a mercy rule just to get through a regular season - not to mention a pandemic season like 2020.
The minor league team mess article doesn't even take into the fact that some team owners have gone broke and may simply close up the shop.
NY State will bail out the NY Teams. Upstate NY may end up being the Minor League Mecca!
