Tom Brennan - How Have All Mets Pitchers Other Than Jake, Thor, and Zack Fared From 2018-20?

Phew! Pitchers other than Jake, Thor, Zack...

I like to analyze numbers. I’m one of those guys.

Ask anyone I know, they’ll tell ya: no one is number than me.

Some say I'm as numb as they come.  Statistically, they may be right.

To a numbers guy, though:

Stats Tell Tales:

I started thinking about the sad state of the Mets season through the first 43 games and then started wondering just how bad the pitching on the team has been in recent seasons once you get past Jake deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Zack Wheeler (as a Met).

Those 3 pitchers, from 2018-20 as Mets, went 24-18 ( Jake), 23-12 (Thor), and 23-15 (Zack). Combined, 70-45.

The rest?  Not good, at 112-140 (.444)

From a total runs allowed perspective:

Mets have allowed 215 (earned and unearned) runs in 370 innings this year;  737 runs in 1461 innings in 2019; and 707 runs in 1,460 innings in 2018.

Over that time, Jake allowed 119 runs in 469 IP, Thor 352 IP, 155 runs, and Wheeler 2018/19, 378 IP, 162 runs.  So those 3 upper tier starters allowed 436 runs in 1,199 IP, or 3.25 per 9 IP, a rate higher than I expected until I remember the painful pen and mediocre defense backing them.

All other pitchers in 2018-20?  1,223 runs in 2,095 innings.

So every other Mets pitcher overall (excluding Jake, Thor, and Zack) allowed an average of 5.23 runs per 9 innings from 2018-20.

That is way too many opponents' happy feet crossing the plate.

That is how teams lose.

When teams cut corners when spending on pitching, they sometimes get by, but over the last 3 years, trying “cheap” has resulted in “you get what you pay for.”

R.A. Dickey-type bargains are the exception, not the rule.

As a Mets fan, who hopes the team (and Jake) does well, it is highly discouraging. Spend wisely, Mr. Cohen.

BEFORE I GO...A QUIZ QUESTION:

Was EDWIN DIAZ’s ERA lower in his insanely excellent 2018 season, or in 2020?

Answer: 2020, at 1.89.

In 2018, his ERA was 1.94.

Also, in 2018, he was 0-4.

This year, he is 2-1.

Don’t forget his 39 Ks in 19 IP.

So start showing some love for Sugar. WILL YA?

Jake great again. Can the bullpen hold the lead?
