Tony Plate - Mets Make Deals at Trade Deadline

Brodie Van Wagenen continues to take the win now approach and the Mets made deals at the trade deadline hoping to enhance the Mets chances of making the playoffs. In a surprise move the Mets reacquired Todd Frazier and also acquired catcher Robinson Chirinos from the Texas Rangers, each for a player to be named later. They also acquired reliever Miguel Castro from the Baltimore Orioles in a deal for minor league pitcher Kevin Smith and a player to be named later or cash.

Van Wagenen felt the Mets currently are not playing great baseball therefore moves had to be made. He feels confident that these deals will give the Mets a boost for the stretch run. The main reason for the Frazier deal was he provides a right-handed bat off of the bench, which hopefully can be a cure for the Mets struggles against left-handed pitching.

I figured Brodie would make deals due to the fact that the Mets can still make a run even though they are not playing well. I thought he would make a big splash type of trade, however when you search for a star type of player you know that the other team will expect the top prospects in return, which Brodie probably would have been reluctant to give up especially since the media hasn’t accepted the Diaz trade.

The Mets are among the top teams in team batting and if the pitching improves, they will contend for a playoff spot. It’s unfortunate that the Mets don’t have the services of Noah and Stroman and if they did, they would have been looking at a possible division title. As for now anything can happen in this unusual season. Stroman is in a contract year; He still is young and he considers himself to be one of the best starters on the market. I think he will draw plenty of interest from the other teams if he doesn’t re-sign with the Mets.

I think the Yankees should try to sign him. Speaking of the Yankees, I was surprised that they didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline. They basically always make deals at this time of year. Their problem has been injuries especially with Judge and Stanton. the Yankees are built to win now and if they get their injured players back right away, they will be serious contenders for a division title during the stretch run.
