Rutgers OF Ryan Lasko is a pretty special talent. Coming off an explosive .349/.431/.643 campaign, Lasko has positioned himself very highly in the eyes of scouts. July could be a big month for Lasko, but he and the Scarlet Knights have big dreams in 2023.

This one was special. Loved getting to chat with Rutgers Baseball star Ryan Lasko. It's been a pleasure watching him play the last couple of years. Big things in store this spring for Ryan and the Scarlet Knights.

12-15-22 - 2022 Fall Report: Rutgers

The third best hitter on the team based on average, center fielder Ryan Lasko, does return and he undoubtedly was the team’s most dynamic player. Lasko slashed .349/.431/.643 last year, big improvements over his solid freshman debut in 2021, hitting 24 doubles, two triples and 16 homers with 51 RBIs, 166 total bases and 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts. A tightly wound athlete that is a ball of pure energy, Lasko batted leadoff and is expected to return to the top spot in the lineup for the 2023 season.

He also is a likely preseason All-America candidate and the favorite for Big Ten Player of the Year honors. With a strong tool set to go along with game-changing tools including impressive bat speed, good foot speed and a strong throwing arm, Lasko could become the highest drafted player from Rutgers since Todd Frazier went in the first round back in 2007.

#47 Ryan Lasko

OF, Rutgers

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

Rutgers University in New Jersey has developed some good hitters -- albeit sporadically -- over the years, with Todd Frazier and David DeJesus the most recent and most successful. Lasko, a starter from the get-go for the Scarlet Knights in 2021, had a big sophomore season, and while his overall numbers over the summer at Team USA trials and in the Cape Cod League were modest, he finished strongly on the Cape and showed off some of the offensive traits that make him an intriguing college bat to follow.

A right-handed hitter, Lasko is strong and gives off a blue collar toughness vibe, while also showing off above-average athleticism. He has the chance to hit, and with plenty of raw power to tap into. His overall solid approach helped him get to that power last spring, as he hit 16 homers and slugged .643 for Rutgers. He struggled a bit more with making contact and recognizing pitches -- particularly spin -- over the summer, leaving some to worry about future swing-and-miss issues.

With above-average speed, Lasko runs well enough to steal a base and has a good chance to stick in center field. He also has a plus arm, which would fit in well with his power profile in an outfield corner if needed.

3. OF Ryan Lasko, Rutgers.

Bat: R. Throw: R. 6', 190 lbs. Born 6/24/2002. Hometown: Jackson, NJ.

2022: 16 HR, .349/.431/.643, 13 SB, 43/30 K/BB in 58 games.

Rutgers' 44 wins last year established a new program record, and a large amount of their success was owed to first team all-Big Ten outfielder Ryan Lasko. He has his strengths and weaknesses, but overall he does a lot well. His whippy right handed swing and strong six foot frame give him above average power that he can spread out to all fields, and he handled Big Ten pitching extremely well with just a 14.2% strikeout rate to go along with his loud slash line.

While he crushes average pitching, there are questions as to his ability to continue to perform with wood bats and against better competition, as he slashed just .257/.329/.316 on the Cape and struck out 23.7% of the time as the jump in competition forced him out of his approach a little bit. Proponents will point to his age, as he's young for his class and won't turn 21 until shortly before the draft, and also the fact that he did start swinging the bat better late in the Cape season, including a .348/.348/.522 run through the playoffs.

Lasko is not just a bat, though. The central Jersey native is also an above average defender in center field, where he should stick in the long run and take some pressure off his right handed bat. He's a strong athlete overall that could make a great fourth outfielder, and if the bat adjusts to better competition like it looks like it's capable of, he could be a starting center fielder that hits 15-20 home runs per season with decent on-base percentages and good defense.

39. Ryan Lasko, OF, Rutgers – Rutgers isn’t exactly a baseball powerhouse, but Lasko is doing his best to help make them relevant. He has put up consecutive seasons with double-digit power numbers and really saw all three of his slash lines take a massive jump. If he can continue making consistent contact at the plate, he could be a guy who flirts with becoming a day one guy thanks to his ability to drive the ball while playing a quality center field. If his contact rate dips closer to what he had his freshman year, he may have to wait until the middle of day two to hear his name called.

Last one. Ryan Lasko had a quiet day but singled once and ran a 4.10 H to 1B (that's fast). Looks like an early day 2 pick to me.

50 OF

Ryan Lasko

Rutgers

A freshman All-American in 2021, Lasko impressed scouts with virtually every aspect of his game at such a young age. Lasko is a reasonably patient hitter with a good feel for the strikezone; a selective hitter. As a young hitter, making consistent contact and striking out would be streaky, but at his best Lasko looked like a complete hitter, and projects well in the Big 10.

Lasko hits the ball hard and should continue to see gains in that category as he gets more comfortable. Lasko is a capable centerfield, and has enough speed to steal some bases too. There's the potential for a toolsy guy here, especially if the bat continues to tick up.
