Star Power: Carter Spivey won the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the year award as a super-stopper in the bullpen, and the Pirates started him and extended him in the postseason, with good results. The development of a nasty cutter to go along with his lively sinker and quality slider makes him a more complete pitcher.

The flexibility of the pitching staff begins with senior righthander Carter Spivey, the reigning AAC pitcher of the year after going 8-0, 2.83 with five saves and 76 strikeouts in 76.1 innings last year. Spivey has proven himself as an elite bullpen stopper who can be extended for multiple innings, and when ECU needed him to start in a do-or-die regional game against Coastal Carolina, he delivered five strong innings of two-run ball. He serves as the ultimate security blanket for this year’s ECU staff, because he can always slide to the bullpen if that works best for the team, but the plan right now is to use him as a rotation anchor. And as good as he was last year, Godwin said he has gotten even better. Even though he doesn’t overpower hitters with  his 88-92 fastball, the pitch has good sink, and he can carve hitters up with his low-80s slider and cutter.
