My thoughts on camp on Tuesday:
LHP Jake Diekman hit camp.
The 37 year old signed a 1-year, with club option in 2025, for around 4mil

Diekman gives the Mets another lefty pen option to consider this spring.
Pricey for an option.
A lot of players hit the field in the morning.
Kodai Senga, Adrian Houser, David Peterson, Mark Vientos, Luis Severino., Edwin Diaz, Francisco Alvarez, Sean Manaea, Tyler Megill, and Francisco Alvarez were all busy.
Alvarez seemed to have lost more of his baby fat and looked slimmer.
I was surprised to see Peterson soft tossing. It's a good sign that he may return earlier than expected from hip surgery.
I particularly am interested in Manaea this spring.
We all know he can pitch. Has a unique delivery that hides the ball from being.picked up by the batter. Had 128 strikeouts last season in 117.2 innings pitched with only 42-BB.
I think he will prove out to be a very successful mid-rotation starter this season.
One thing that stood out were Vientos' statements.
He told reporters that his only competition this spring was himself. I totally agree with him. There are multiple roles and positions opened to this 24 year old this season. One of them is his for the taking.
In summary, a loose day with a lot of hugging, catching up, soft tossing, and light batting practice.
Tomorrow, spring training for all the affiliates open.

There is a change in the FCL Mets schedule this season
Old dates were June 5 - August 22
Now:
May 9 - July 25
Weird. This team has been the drop zone for the majority of players drafted in the same year.
Not so more.
Look for less low end players released and more graduations from the DSL leagues
Odd, but I like it. Draft good people and send them right to the St Lucie Mets. Those in the FCL not cutting it by July 25 probably will never make it.
To me, Diekman price is good for a guy who put up 57 relief innings last year,
Alvarez probably took one look at Vogel bach last year, and said, I gotta lose weight!
Management believes in Vientos. It appears, in part because of budget constraints. So, he’s finally getting a break, and now he needs to make the most of it.

Vientos seems pumped
Much different from his first arrival
I think Vientos this year, without looking back, is still younger than Pete Alonso was when he made his MLB debut. I would imagine that the year before Pete made his major league debut, he would’ve struggled a lot in the major leagues. Vientos has played in the major leagues, and honestly, he may really break out. People just don’t seem to realize that his power is pretty darn close to that of Peter Alonzo. All we are saying, is, give Mark a chance
Quit comparing Vientos to Alonso! Pete hit 50 his first season. I don’t think Vientos hits 50 his whole career. Next you’ll be comparing Baty to Wright. By the way we never here any thing about Baty and he’s a better prospect then Vientos.
I think Vientos is better than Alonso. His AAA numbers make Alonso’s look like he should have stayed there.

I'm excited to see both Vientos and Baty this spring - they may both become the pleasant surprises of the 2024 season.
