People clamoring for another Mets bat, clamoring for JD Martinez, may not be giving enough credit to the new guy who is already here, totally titled as totally terrific and totally talented Tyrone Taylor. Totally, dudes.
Tyrone defensively has “game”, y’all. Let’s start there.
He has NEVER EVER made a major league error, and has had very positive defensive runs-saved stats.
Steals? In his career, a nifty 18 of 21 in 972 plate appearances.
Good power, too…28 extra base hits in 243 plate appearances in 2023, a fine rate.
And career, he hits .286 with runners in scoring position? Sweet.
And his career Sept/Oct stats are .282/.325/.560?? Wow.
41 career HRs in 972 plate appearances?
BOOM! Let’s see another Mets outfielder who can do that.
Career, he hits righties and lefties very similarly, stats-wise.
None of that “can’t hit righties” stuff.
And Baseball Reference has a projected slash line of .241/.298/.446 for him for 2024. Nothing wrong with that, if you ask me. DH JD Martinez’s protected 2024 is .268/.329/.494. Given Taylor’s clear edge in speed and fielding, 2024 projections are almost a draw there.
Maybe even that Tyrone’ slash is understated. Why?
Tyrone missed a lot of time with injuries in 2023, but was healthy in August and September.
In those final 2 months of 2023, he generated an excellent .280/.325/.570 in 147 plate appearances. 14 doubles, a triple, and 8 homers. Wow.
He was a 2nd round pick in 2012. By the time he was drafted that year, the Mets had already drafted Gavin Cecchini, Kevin Plawecki, and Teddy Stankiewicz. Tyrone has been the best of those four.
Ask me about all of the above reasons to be pro-Tyrone? I like all those reasons.

Tyrone has been up far fewer times than Michael Conforto. But on a per–100 plate appearance basis, TAYLOR and Conforto are actually pretty equal. As Casey used to say, you can look it up.

I’ve been thinking that MLB needs to add a Breakout Player of the Year award for each league. Guys have to have at least two years of service time coming into the season, and the guy who makes the most significant and impactful leap forward in performance, wins. Would give MLB an opportunity to highlight emerging stars who maybe have flown under the radar while getting adjusted or playing sparingly. Also, highlighting the fact that not every great player was great from the minute they showed up - in fact, a lot of guys take a minute to develop at the level - would possibly give teams and players a bit more breathing room with the fans to stick by their young, cheap players while they try to figure it out. The betting markets (I don’t bet sports, but it is what it is at the moment) would also be interesting.

2024 NY Mets Outfield
Here's how I see it in an ideal format. Remember, the key word here is "ideal", a place that does not always happen in real time.
LF Vientos CF Bader RF Nimmo
So what has to fall into place for this to actually happen you ask? A few things. First, Brett Baty has to show up at third as "the guy" there. I he can. Secondly, Mark Vientos has "to make LF his ownership." I know he can.
The key utility guys would be INF Joey Wendle (but he still needs to grow that big beard Luis had), and OF's DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor.
So where does Starling Marte play you ask? He starts the season as the team's DH to get his legs game ready.
I might pass on any outside more big bats for the DH. The Mets have DJ Stewart as well bidding for DH. The bigger issue here, to me, remains with the rotation.
With this 2024 rotation, I might pass on the huge contract remaining Free Agents. Snell is the better of the group, but mucho dinero required and you know how that normally goes here in Flushing Meadows.
I might rather go with this idea that I stated yesterday: 1. Senga 2. Severino 3. Mataea 4. Stuart (slight change-up from my yesterday's post where I had Tyler Stuart in the three slot). 5. Lucchesi. The 6th slot would be Houser with the seventh going to Megill. They can leg-wrestle it out which slot. Both are solid for these roles, and injuries do often happen here. Houser and Megill could start 2024 in long relief. It's just good old common sense.
Do I think the Mets will see the importance of giving Tyler Stuart a realistic shot at the Mets' four slot? Not so sure on this really. But it isn't the Wilpon conservative approach here anymore, so hopefully they will consider this. We need some younger bodies here with vast abilities to root for.
Tyler Stuart really caught my attention in the videos I watched on him recently. He has a nasty 3/4 arm whipping delivery and is either 6'9" or 6'7" tall, depending on which website you read. This makes the ball delivery close to the batter, and with outstanding ball movement. He will lock up batters in the bigs as well. He has a fast ball, slider, and change-up. He is young, but already I like him better than Thor.
The other four really good young starters: Mike Vasil at AAA, Christian Scott, Blade Tidwell, and Dominic Hamel at AA Bing, are all outstanding starters as well. But each one does need further development in the minors to be "Mets Ready" in my opinion. I look for one or two of these four to be up here second half of this season.

Anon, a lot of interesting stuff there, but I must disagree with you on the ideal outfield. The one detractor of Nimmo is his arm - he does not have a right-field arm. Vientos may be ok out there in left field in a pinch, but he is not an outfielder. This alignment would be a poor defensive outfield. I would play Nimmo-Bader-Marte or Nimmo-Bader-Taylor for my ideal alignment.
I see Quintana is missing from your pitching staff. You are not counting on any innings from him? My starting 5 are Senga, Quintana, Severino, Manaea, and Megill/Houser at this point. There will certainly be injuries, and Peterson will be coming back in June to fill in. Also, it may be hard to keep Butto from the rotation. I like the depth they have now. (Lucchesi is a solid #7).
Back to Tom's original article, nice job on bringing the story about Taylor. I agree that he has a lot of upside and should get plenty of at-bats to show what he can do.
Adam, sounds like a good idea. Remember what I wrote about Adrian Beltre - he was good but not great for several years, flipped a switch, and in the HOF quickly.
Vientos could be our full time first baseman if Pete leaves.
Bill, I think if Taylor got 500 at bats, we’d like the results. He is light years better than faltering 4/5 outfielders the Mets have hoped feverishly would turn out to be impactful like Almora, Jankowski. Taylor is a REAL 4th outfielder.
