My Spin - Spring Training 2/20/24

Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner spent a considerable time checking out Shintaro Fujinami during his bullpen session.  I have a funny feeling we are going to see a lot of him this spring.

Interesting battle of the Mets reporters this morning. Hector Lopez, who has been pretty spot on when it comes to Latin player news scoops, is reporting that the Mets and Francisco Alvarez are close to a long term extension.

But... the Martino Man from SNY says NFW.

Hmm..

David Wright is in the house.

    on the HOF ballot:

" it was awesome  making the HOF cut. It is an incredible honor and something I don't take lightly. To be able to stay on means the world to me"

    on David Stearns:

"to have him lead the way makes me feel confident in the organization and should make the fanbase and the city happy."

Tyler Megill will start the spring training - game one

Francisco Alvarez -

"I just want to get better. I want to get better in all aspects of the game."

Carlos Mendosa

" I believe that Sean Manaea is going to be a big part of the rotation..."

My wild helium prediction for this season...

Christian Scott will be SP2 by the end of the season

Reports I'm getting is he has been virtually unhittable so far this spring

I am very high on Manaea, Megill and Alvarez in 2024

Tom Brennan said...

Scott no AAA yet…time will tell.

So, Mack…is Scott your Spencer Strider?

Mack Ade said...

Yes

I saw this when a rook came to the Sand Gnats camp designated as the SP7 twice on line for a step-up to the rotation

He was SP1 by the end of the season

At 6-5, 245lb, Manaea is certainly going to be a big part of the rotation. He'll be a big part of the buffet, too.
But will he be able to get his WHIP down? It has been going up steadily over the last 4 years and you can't eat innings when there are always men on base.

This is the real test of Hefner and the pitching lab

Read an article on Realmuto where he used a hitting lab to improve his swing...where's our's? Martino's probably pissed he missed the scoop so time will tell. Again I know it's early and we all have high expectations every spring but after a very slow and boring off season I'm getting excited again. DS has a solid core here and has certainly thrown enough s**t agains't the wall some should stick and along with exciting young players at almost every position call me caustiously optimistic. Mack I was thinking the other day about how excited I was back in the day for March to roll around because that's when the rookie edition of Baseball Digest came out. Rookie info was hard to come by except maybe The Sporting News but BD was my go to. Now if I don't get the info instantly I get upset LOL times have certainly changed.

Yes. Times have changed

I now have more hair in my ears than my head.

Will we ever get full info on the "lab" and what it does, or is it just somewhere "in the cloud"?

🤣

Who was he?

I doubt we see an Alvarez extension anytime soon because it's unlikely the Mets want to have extra money in the CBT calculation. Certainly not before the end of Spring Training and it's possible it might not be until after ST 2025.

Brian, this is Tom, and that is my feeling, too. It takes considerable willpower to rein in huge levels of spending and the luxury taxes that go with it. I can see doing an extension this off-season.

bill metsiac said...

Why can't they negotiate an extension that doesn't begin until next season?

Anyone else can weigh in if I have this wrong, but I think it hits the cap on average annual value. So right now, Alvarez is about $1 million on the cap. If he signs for 10 years, $150 million, I think the 2024 salary for cap reasons would be $15 million. At 110% tax, that adds $30 million to 2024 outlays.
