OPEN THREAD - So, Are the Mets Done?

Are the Mets done acquiring?

More specifically, do they need another bat?

After all, the pitching has been pretty well shored up.

Hitting? If Ronny Mauricio had not had his MCL injury, the "add a bat?" answer would probably be an emphatic NO!

After all, right now, whatever at bats would go just to Vientos and Baty this year (800?) would have been 800-1,000 at bats to Mauricio, Vientos, and Baty.  Then, any one of them scuffles, the other two non-scufflers are right there to get most of the at bats.  Low risk of substandard hitting from that trio.

But Baty and Vientos struggled a lot in 2023. Will however much growth the duo achieves in 2024 be enough?  Higher risk of some degree of struggles.

And, after all, we all want growth from young guys - steady-to-spectacular growth - but Pete, after his prodigious 2019 rookie season, struggled in 2020.

Time may heal all wounds, but time does not always heal all bats.

But if you do acquire another bat, will stunted growth from less-used Baty and Vientos result?

So...if you are David Stearns, do you stand pat or keep signing/dealing?

What sayest thou?

I say stand pat. No further additions needed at this point.

JD Martinez. Protection for Alonso, deeper lineup, professional hitter, show the kids how it’s done. Sort deal. No brainer.

I read somewhere they have saved some funds for mid season in case they are in the race

Good plan

I’d love to have JD Martinez, but I agree on mid-season spending approach to tweak as appropriate.

My brother Steve? Told me 100 times this winter that he REALLY wants Martinez, to make the line up dangerous.

No more pitching unless spring training injuries force their hand.

Ditto Mack's comments. Give Baty and Vientos essentially full time roles for the first half. Adjust as needed at the trade deadline. Let's play ball with what we have.

They are done. They would not have waited this long if they were going to acquire an impact player. The 2024 season will be an evaluation year.

Paul, I agree. Tyrone Taylor and Wendle will get playing time. What they lack in offense, they will make up in defense.

I don't have any data to back this up, but I feel Vientos is a player who is going to do well. He seems to always struggle when he moves up a league and then a month later, he hits pretty well. Maybe it's hope that he will do well, but for such a young player, he can be pretty dangerous. I would not platoon him. Is JD a better hitter than him, yes. But saving that salary for hopefully a mid season pick up because the Mets will be in the hunt, I just feel is more beneficial.

Rosario,Hand and Sanchez? Not sure how cheap they will be. Is the market going to soften for that tier of player? We’ll see. Seems quiet out there.
