Frank Camarillo is a
right-handed pitcher from UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), selected by the New York
Mets in the 13th round (403rd overall) of the 2025 MLB Draft.
A 21-year-old redshirt junior, Camarillo, stands at
6-foot-2 and weighs approximately 190 pounds. He’s recognized for his academic
excellence, earning the highest GPA on the UCSB baseball team, and his on-field
performance has drawn attention for its consistency and potential.
College Career:
In 2024 at UCSB, Camarillo appeared in 13 games,
including one start, posting a 2-0 record with a 3.86 ERA over 21 innings,
striking out 18 and walking 7. In the summer of 2024, he pitched for the
Corvallis Knights in the West Coast League, making 10 appearances with a 1.20
ERA over 15 innings, showcasing improved command.
2025 stats – 8-G, 3-ST, 1-1, 6.53, 20-2-IP, 19-K
Repertoire:
Camarillo’s arsenal includes:
Fastball: Sits in the
low-90s (90-93 mph), with reports suggesting he can touch 94-95 mph, offering
good arm-side run and deception due to his delivery.
Slider: A mid-80s
breaking ball (82-86 mph) with sharp, late bite, serving as his primary
out-pitch with swing-and-miss potential.
Changeup: Thrown in
the low-80s, with developing feel, providing some fade but still a work in
progress compared to his fastball-slider combination.
Curveball:
Occasionally mixed in, likely in the high-70s to low-80s, adding depth to his
arsenal but used less frequently than the slider.
Scouts note his fastball-slider combo as his strength,
with the slider being particularly effective against both right- and
left-handed hitters. His command is above-average for a college reliever,
though his secondary pitches need refinement for a potential starting role.
Scouting and Future:
Camarillo’s lean frame and clean delivery suggest room
for velocity gains, projecting him as a middle-relief or setup pitcher in pro
ball, with a chance to develop into a starter if his changeup improves.
Mack –
Ya
know, I’m getting pretty tired of researching draft picks that need
adjustments. There always is at least one player that has dominated on the mound
for their school, regardless of how big their school is. So far, that doesn’t
exist in this Mets draft. Sigh.

I only am interested if our gurus can coax guys like Camarillo up by 3 to 5 MPH.
