It is getting very close to the trade deadline. David Stearns has made it pretty clear that his target is to beef up the bullpen. Great start with Greg Soto, a hard throwing lefty that gives the Mets two very talented left-handed relievers (Raley) to counter any opponent’s late inning threats. Garrett and Stanek give you the same from the right side, and of course Diaz remains the closer.
So if you are Stearns, do you declare victory? Or do you continue to add? We have certainly seen some innings from Stanek that would suggest that the Mets are not yet comfortable with late inning relief.
In my eyes, the focus should shift towards the middle relief. Butto is a well-established middle innings guy, and we have often speculated that Tylor Megill could become a great option to eat up 2-3 innings in middle relief. Stearns has made it known that he considers the AAA talent pipeline as a viable option for that role.
There is not much doubt that there is a need, with a starting rotation that fails to provide enough quality starts. Aside from David Peterson, there is no one else in the rotation that can be trusted to give six innings per game. Holmes is beyond his career norms for innings pitched in a season; Senga still only gives the Mets 4-5 innings long past his recovery from injury; and Manaea has not stretched out to give the team length.
Carlos Mendoza continues to play a very conservative line with his starters, yanking them after the first hint of trouble following their 70th pitch.
There are several ways that one could look at the Mets’ roster at the MLB, AAA, and AA level and conjure up a middle innings solution. But the other factor to consider is the position that the sellers are taking. Several teams are in the market for future prospects, and may be willing to part with a strategic bullpen piece to get a promising infield prospect.
In my post last Monday, I made the provocative case that the “baby Mets” were underperforming and could be considered as trade collateral for the right player. The intent there was to shake things up on a passionless team, but now 7 games and 7 wins later they have found a way to start winning. That does not invalidate the thought that at least one of the baby Mets could be considered for the right piece.
They must have heard what I was thinking, because Alvarez has returned to the majors with renewed confidence and production at the plate, Mauricio went 4-4 last night with a homer and two doubles, and Baty has a .781 OPS in July.
Most of the talk in trade rumors is about starting pitchers and closers, so the middle relievers don’t get much play. But if that is the need, the Mets could look at a guy like Ryne Nelson from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nelson has quietly put together a 3.29 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP in 26 innings this year, and he has only walked 6 batters in the process.
This is the kind of play that makes sense for the Mets and gives Vientos new life as a position player. Would you make this deal?

Would Vientos to Pittsburgh for Bednar be doable? We don’t need a decent pen…we need a killer pen. Bednar would likely give the Metsies that.
Mark can resuscitate his career in Pittsburgh.
Look...
On my team, Vientos would be gone for a multiple inning middle reliever
Kids coming mid-August
Not sure if I would do more than this
Bednar is without doubt a great pitcher and it looks like he may be available. But my point is that we have a lot of late inning guys right now and the middle is the area in need. So if you bring in another closer-type guy you are overloaded with one-inning pitchers. History shows that if you use 5 one-inning guys to finish a short start, one of them inevitably fails to hold the lead.
Agree with Mack, but hopefully, Vientos (+?) can get us Bednar.
I could deal with Pablo Reyes (.318/.419/.557 in 24 Syracuse games) as a short term Vientos replacement until mid-August or Sept 1.
Aside from this, Interesting Mets stat of-the day? It appears they are 21 for 21 in steals in July. More eye-opening starts tomorrow.
Why would the Pirates want Vientos?
we have to give to get... but these baby mets are showing why its hard to give up on them.
Sterns is on the clock for me to evaluate assets. to me he is graded by who he trades and who he keeps.
for example, could it be fair to question why he and his staff didnt see the vientos regression and not trade high this off season?
Another example was Sproat. He was untouchable this offseason, but we could have acquired Crochet for sproat and jett (which i would have done)
So who stays and who goes is how your evaluated.
They ate asking for FAR MORE than a guy like Vientos
Makes.a good marinara sauce
I would give him an A+ if he only looks for relief help here
Good points from everyone. Eddie, I think he has been evaluating the kids all season. It will be interesting to see what he decides. I have Vientos as the odd man out. I also wouldn't give Mauricio any right handed AB's.
I also agree with Mack on a Middle reliever/innings eater. Don't get me wrong, I would love Bednar, but I the cost would be prohibitive.
I believe some help will be coming from the minors for some pitching help. Can't wait to see how this plays out.
I believe it is August 26 when minor league players can be called up and still qualify for 2026 ROY
Eddie, sometimes hitters’ regressions can last a year, and then the bounce back season follows. That should help Vientos’ value above its current level.
But, as Mack says, they will want more. There will be real competition for Bednar. Pain will be required.
Paul, in my view, long relief or pen, we need lock down pitchers. Hopefully the starters are up to going 6 innings and we need 3 relievers n a game, not 5.
Hey, where the heck is JD Martinez?
The Mets are deep in starters
If they can't add to pen, watch for one or more of them be added after August 26
He was last seen stocking shelves at Tractor Supply
I love and hate trade season, exciting to see who we add for the stretch run. Sometimes it costs us players whose box scores I’ve been checking for years lol. Curious to see who else we are adding?
A name not mentioned….Steve Matz is 5-2, 3.23 in relief for St Louis, which is 3.5 games out of the Wild Card. There’s a middle reliever for you at the right price?
Is the Cards a seller?
Mack, to retain ROY qualification a batter can not have more than 130 at bats and pitchers can not have mor than 50 innings pitched. the other disqualifier 45 days on the active roster before Sept 1 roster expansion.
