mlb - Contrary to popular opinion, Mets general manager Omar Minaya never asked ownership to eat the salaries of Oliver Perez or Luis Castillo. Although the team played shorthanded for much of this season due to manager Jerry Manuel's steadfast refusal to use Perez, a left-handed pitcher, and Castillo, a second baseman, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said Monday that Minaya never asked permission to cut Perez or Castillo. "The way we look at it is that we deal with the comments and suggestions that are brought to us from the general manager," Wilpon said. "There was never a time where there was a suggestion where they said, 'Get rid of so-and-so and eat the contract.' If that had been brought up, we would have taken it under advisement and spoken about it with [ownership]. But that was never brought to us."
Bob Melvin:
maller - More than anything else, the Brewers apparently decided a fresh start was necessary to try to pull the team out of its two-year slide since going to the playoffs in 2008. Because of that, some believe GM Doug Melvin will bypass bench coach Willie Randolph and go outside of the organization for the next manager. One possible candidate mentioned was Bob Melvin, a former bench coach under Brewers manager Phil Garner who has managed in Seattle and Arizona. Currently a scout for the New York Mets, Melvin interviewed for the Brewers’ managerial opening that went to Ned Yost before the 2003 season. — Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

BTF - “I haven’t pitched much, but that’s no excuse. You have to be ready in those situations, but that was a horrible outing for me,” said Perez, who appeared in just three of the Mets’ final 57 games. “The season’s ending, but the season’s not over for me. I have a lot of (work) to do. I’m going to throw winter ball (in Mexico) and I have to get better.” Perez, who finished the season 0-5 with a 6.80 ERA in 17 games, was booed upon entering a 1-1 game in the top of the 14th. And despite hearing mock chants of “MVP” after striking out the first batter he faced, Perez left to even louder boos when Jerry Manuel replaced him with Pat Misch after his latest meltdown. “It’s not easy, it’s been very tough for me. I do have feelings. But I do want to come back here,” Perez said. “I need to prove to the people that I can be the pitcher I was before. ... They boo because I’m not pitching good. When you don’t do the job, that’s what they’re going to do.”

NYDN - The Mets expect to officially address Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya's jobs early this week, but it appears that most members of the coaching staff will wait longer to learn if they will return in 2011. While it has long been clear that Manuel will not be offered another contract and Minaya will lose power or be dismissed, some coaches could survive, according to people with knowledge of the Mets' plans. The team has not yet made final decisions on most of its coaches, although it is still possible that all or most will simply become victims of organizational change
