No, this is not a "trash the Wilpons" posting.
I just thought I should point out what my day was like yesterday. I tried to get ahead on the web site writing for the weekend, so I was glued to my desk, with the games on to my right.
The first game was Texas. Cliff Lee.
The next was Philadelphia. Doc Halladay
Fred, this is why Mets fans wanted a quality free agent SP these past few years.
I know you were "advised" that your current staff was good enough, but what went on yesterday on my television set wasn't just good enough. Yeah, the hitting went south, but, ya know, there would have been far less grand slams against one of these guys.
I watched a lot of good ballplayers pick up a bat yesterday, both on these two teams, and the ones they beat. Philadelphia has a good lineup. So does Texas.
But, boy, did it really matter who Tampa Bay or Cincinnati sent up to the plate last night?
You just can't put a value on a Cliff Lee or Roy Halladay in a short playoff series. They both took a very good team and made it unbeatable yesterday, something Johan Santana used to be able to do, and something the other Mets starters hope someday to become.
Can you image what this past season could have been with Santana as the SP2?
Look, I know you're busy right now. The GM job is a quality gig and I'm sure their knocking your doors down.
But make a list... ask one of your assistants to go online and write down the names of all the starting pitchers that become free agents next month...
One of them is named... Cliff Lee.

IF indeed Omar came to the Wilpons to write a check (in cash and/or players) for Lee, Oswalt, King Felix, whomever, and they nixed the deal as too expensive or because THEY assessed Pelf & Neise equivalent, then you are absolutely right and the meddling charges rise to the felony level.
But their crime, it seems to me, is doing the opposite: leaving the baseball decisions to their GM and his assessors without accountability in October. I would give them a Mulligan for ’09 if that was an isolated incident (injury plague), but am less inclined after two successive collapses.
Maybe I’m completely off-base here and Manaya was just a frustrated puppet, reaching out only to find the string too short. In general, however, I am not a fan of conspiracy theories.
Fred Wilpon is a gentleman... if he said he wasn't approached by Omar, then he wasn't.
