LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets jumped out to a six-run lead and fended off a late Akron rally to preserve a 6-2 win in the first game of a three-game series last night at Canal Park. The B-Mets took advantage on Nick Johnson’s missed catch error to score the game’s first run in the first inning. In the fifth, five straight men reached base with hits to produce a three-run frame. Carlos Guzman and Raul Reyes started the rally with singles and came home on Jose Coronado’s double. Following a Jon Malo sac bunt, Reese Havens plated Coronado with a single through the right side. It was the first of three hits in the game for Havens. Binghamton extended their lead thanks to a lead off walk by Akron starter Joe Gardner. Brahiam Maldonado earned the free pass and scored on Reyes’ single to right field. The B-Mets scored their sixth and final run off relief Bryan Price in the seventh. Starter Brandon Moore was magnificent yet again versus the Aeros. The right-hander al-lowed just three hits and struck out four in six shutout inning en route to his fifth win of the year. Eric Niesen put up score-less frames in the seventh and eighth, but ran into trouble in the ninth. After allowing the first two men to reach, he exited an out shy of the three-out sage. Brandon Sage entered and allowed an RBI single before nailing down the win.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Brad Holt makes his eleventh start of the season and second against the Aeros. Holt was perfect through four innings before things unraveled in the fifth inning in a loss to the Altoona Curve on May 30. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked two, and uncorked two wild pitches in a four-run fifth. Holt tossed five shutout innings in a no-decision versus Akron on April 9.
RHP Austin Adams will make his eleventh start of the season and second against the B-Mets. Adams allowed an unearned run on four hits over five innings in a no-decision against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on May 30. Adams posted six shut-out innings against Binghamton in a win on April 10. He al-lowed just one run on three hits over seven innings in a win over the B-Mets on May 1. He was selected by the Indians in the 5th round of the 2009 draft out of Fauklner University (Montgomery, AL).
GROUNDING THE AEROS: In two starts against Akron this year, RHP Brandon Moore has not allowed an earned run over 13.0 innings. He is 2-0 with 13 strike outs and only five hits.
MOVIN’ ON UP: Prior to last night’s game, B-Mets reliever Erik Turgeon was promoted to the Buffalo Bisons. Turgeon made a team-best 21 games and went 2-1 with a 4.68 ERA. He tossed two perfect innings vs Erie on May 31 in his last appearance.
