2021 MLB Draft - Mets Pick # 3.81 - RHP - Dominic Hamel - UPDATE - New Info + Mack's spin

Dominic Hamel

RHP     6-2     206     Dallas Baptist

Mack's spin -

Well, ny guess is the guy in the Mets draft room that is known as the Spin Doctor was dancing in the halls when they called out this name.

Hamel is all about spin rate and you pick this dark horse in the 3rd round because you know in your heart that he still isn't going to be on the board when you pick next.

Hamel is going to pitch someday in the majors. My only question is whether he takes the Seth Lugo route to get there.

7-13-21 - CBS Sports -

Hamel, a 22-year-old out of Dallas Baptist, is one of the sleepers of this class. According to Prospects Live, Hamel had a 27 percent whiff rate in the zone and a 33 percent whiff rate on all induced swings, proving that he has the stuff to miss bats (136 strikeouts in 91.2 IP). The 6-foot-2 righty has a modern fastball that plays well above its low-90s velocity (touches 95 mph) thanks to riding life. His big breaking curveball is his best secondary offering and his changeup neutralizes left-handed hitters. Hamel's high-spin slider also has promise. His ratios this year (4.22 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) don't stand out, which should allow him to fly under the radar until he makes his pro debut.

In addition to his fastball, Hamel throws a slider, curveball, and changeup. His slider and curveball sometimes blend together, but they are two distinct pitches, a low-80s slider with late sweepy break and a mid-70s curveball with big downward break. Both pitches have high spin rates and tunnel well with his fastball and have the potential to be average-or-better pitches with some work. His changeup lags far behind his breaking ball and decidedly a below-average pitch in the present. He does have a feel for the pitch, which sits in the low-80s with some late fade, and with more usage could develop it further. His command of all of his secondary pitches, like his fastball, is far from pinpoint, but he has shown some improvements in that regard even as recently as this past spring.

Dominic Hamel, RHP (No. 91) -- Analytically minded clubs love Hamel, who leads D-I with 13 victories and has gone 15-2 for the Patriots since transferring from Yavapai (Ariz.) JC, because he features high spin rates on his fastball, curveball and slider.

Dominic Hamel has been terrific this year.

76 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. Just 13 walks. And a high-spin heater

Dominic Hamel, RHP, Dallas Baptist—No. 211

Hamel ranked as the No. 238 prospect on the BA 500 a year ago after throwing two good games and two poor ones in the shortened 2020 season. Through nine starts in 2020, he’s been terrific, posting a 2.45 ERA over 47.2 innings with Dallas Baptist, while striking out 76 batters (14.4 K/9) and walking 13 (2.5 K/9). His 76 strikeouts are good for eighth among Division I pitchers. While he sits around 92 with his fastball, which was praised as a high-spin pitch a year ago, Hamel has done a nice job this spring manipulating a low-80s slider depending on the count. He has shown good feel to land the pitch for strikes and adds more depth to the offering when he needs to use it as a putaway. It doesn’t look plus, perhaps more of an above-average offering. Hamel has also thrown a mid-80s changeup which has slight running action as well as a low-70s curveball with 11-5 movement and slower arm speed, but he’s missed the strike zone more often with those offerings and primarily has worked off of his fastball/slider combination.

Fastball has a ton of ride. Generally 91-94 touching 96. Plus extension allows the perceived velocity to jump on hitters. Big spin breaking stuff is still raw, but with better efficiency, could develop some plus offerings. Hamel has some of the better pitch data in the class and that will certainly appeal to model organizations. If the fastball more routinely sits 94-95 in 2021, Hamel could be a Top 50 talent in the class.

Prospect Live -

Hamel might be the biggest steal in the ’21 draft from an analytic standpoint. The Dallas Baptist right hander has arguably the best spin rates across his repertoire of all pitchers eligible for the ’21 draft.

He hits the mark with his slider and curve both approaching 3000 rpm (elite), and his fastball is a solid 93–96. That fastball has possibly the best vertical movement in the draft, at 2500 rpm which is also elite. His extension is a solid 6.5 feet, resulting in a very good vertical approach angle, release height, and an even quicker feel on the heater. He is very efficient with his fastball, and with elite break on the curve and slider, he could easily become a first round pick with a quality 2021 season.

Mechanically he is very smooth, though I feel he could still get a little more from his backside coming forward post leg drive and front foot plant (+1–2 mph are definitely in him). Hammel carries himself with a swagger on the rubber, something you want to see out of your pitchers.

Teams in need of arms in the 2nd round should look to snatch him up, as the metrics point towards him projecting out, and Dallas Baptist has a reputation of developing its players very well.

2020 DRAFT:- Hamel has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. He pitches with an up-tempo delivery, regular effort, landing slightly closed and coming through a high three-quarter slot with average arm speed. He strides long down the mound, getting good drive out of his lower half. His fastball ranges from 91-94 mph with some arm-side run and he holds his velo well into the game. His go-to secondary pitch is a low-80s slider. It's an above average pitch. Racked up swings and misses on fastball and slider all game. Also mixes in an occasional curveball with sharp 10/4 break at 73-74. It's a fringy pitch, but he has feel for it and can throw it for strikes just to keep it in hitters’ minds. He also showed a changeup in warm-ups, but did not throw it in the game. For the 2020 season, Hamel finished with 27 strikeouts in 19.2 IP.Due to limited looks on the JC transfer from Yavapai, AZ, Hamel was not seen by many cross-checkers during the four-week college season, and as a result, is undervalued heading into this June draft by many clubs.

Very interesting pick. Huge spin rate & one of the scouts I just texted with, not in METS org, said this was actually a very good pick.
Great overview, Mack.
