Woody Fryman faces the minimum 27 batters in the Pirates' 12-0 rout of the Mets at Shea Stadium. New York leadoff hitter Ron Hunt singles to center to start the bottom of the first, but is tagged out trying to swipe second base.

2013
Before the game at Citi Field, the Mets and Diamondbacks honor the 19 firefighters killed while battling a wildfire in Yarnell, Arizona with a moment of silence. Additionally, each team hangs a jersey with the word Yarnell stitched on the back above the number 19 in their respective dugouts.

1973: At Wrigley Field, the Mets edge the Cubs, 6 - 5, in the first game of a doubleheader. Then it is the Cubs' turn, as Randy Hundley bangs a 9th inning 3-run homer to give Chicago the 6 - 5 edge. Ron Santo has seven hits for the afternoon, five in the nitecap.

1998 - Trailing the Mets, 8 - 7, in the bottom of the 8th inning, Toronto comes up with eight runs. New York fights back with two in their half of the 9th, but the Blue Jays hold on for a 15 - 10 triumph.

2009: Is the era of high scoring over ? For the first time since September 1, 1976, three National League games end in 1 - 0 scores on the same day. All of the shutouts are combined efforts: Mike Pelfrey of the Mets beats Milwaukee, Johnny Cueto leads the Reds over Arizona, and the Dodgers defeat Colorado with an 8th-inning run.

Alex Ramirez hitting .333 since his 2 for 18 start. Amazing for 18 yr old.

At the end of the top of the first, I was sure we were ready to watch a 2-0 Mets perfect game. OK, so I was wrong.

I remember the Mets winning 19-1 against Cubs with 23 hits in the mid 1960s. They lost the next game.

This game makes you appreciate what Tylor Megill has accomplished.

Szapucki…after his last few AAA outings with lots of runners, not surprised he allowed 10 hits/walks in 3.2 IP.

REALLY NOW…WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THE HITTERS ALREADY?

I saw Szapucki years ago w/ Brooklyn -- it was a terrible team, one of the worst I'd ever seen -- but he looked to me like he was going to have a career.

Then TJ surgery.

Got to see him on TV last night.

I have a basic rule about pitchers: I like to SEE how they get guys out. The swing-and-miss high heat, a sharp slider, a killer changeup, something that you can point to and say, "That's Major League."

I didn't see any of that last night.

Just a lefty chucking the ball up there.

Oh well. He'll get more chances. I don't think he's going to help the big team.

Bobby Bonilla will get a paycheck from the Mets long after Francisco Lindor gets his last one from the Mets, or Fernando Tatis Jr. From the Padres.

Jimmy - Szapucki actually looked better to start the year in Syracuse with min 90's velocity but has been moved back and forth from the Taxi squad to Syracuse that he has off for the past month or so. Best for him would be to leave him at AAA to let him get innings and regular work.

I thought the Berrios/Donaldson concept was interesting and believable from the Twins POV -- looking to tie a bad contract in Donaldson 4/$93 to any Berrios move.

Short term, for 2021 and 2022, Donaldson (who seems insane) would work at 3B. It would certainly energize the lineup.

I think Baty should be our guy to start 2023. Then, I guess, you hope to move Donaldson for those final two years?

So what do you give up for something like that?

Berrios is art-eligible in 2022, free agent in 2023.

Do you send along Jeff McNeil? I love Jeff, and believe in his bat. I also like him in RF next season. I don't think he's our 2B next year.

Help me think about this, guys.

I think improvements via trades for Mets will be tough. Farm is barren and young players like McNeil and Smith are slumping. Given the choice - I'd rather give up a slumping McNeil over a prospect but I could go either way. Given Peterson's injury - Mets may overpay for Berrios/Donaldson

I think that trade is doable. We have the chips. The question is on price and how far we'd go.

Plugging Donaldson into the lineup would be positive. Getting Berrios for this season and next would also be huge.

JD Davis would go, easily, since we'd have no use for him. Maybe McNeil is too big a price; maybe not. What about Dom Smith?

I don't want to include Mauricio, but that's a guy who would get the Twins attention. Vientos?

I don't move Baty, Alvarez, Allen, Ginn, or Crowe-Armstrong.

Agree. I don't touch Baty, Allan, Alvarez, Ginn or Crow-Armstrong either. Apparently Cubs wanted Alvarez for Bryant and Mets said no.

I think taking on the Donaldson contract enables a deal without a top prospect. Maybe a Szapucki or a Kilome?

Btw, before a recent injury, at least Kilome threw a 7 inning shutout - 1 hitter this year. That's something Szapucki has not approached yet this year.

I think at this point I would do a McNeil and Vientos for Donaldson and Berrios. That is taking a lot of salary and giving up a lot of control, but Donaldson, if healthy, even at 35 is a better 3rd baseman than they have had in quite a while. Berrios is an established MLB starter. One and a half years with the NL East being what it is is worth it to try to win now.
