MLB - Pick 1.8 - OF - Benny Montgomery

Benny Montgomery

6-12-21 - CBS Sports - CBS Mock Draft

13  Phillies

Pick: OF Benny Montgomery, Red Land HS (Pennsylvania) ($4,197,300 slot value)

Montgomery is a somewhat local kid (he's from the Harrisburg area) and there's been a good amount of buzz connecting him to the Phillies. He's one of the best athletes in the draft class and he has explosive power, though there is some rigidity to his swing, creating concerns about his ability to handle higher level pitching. That said, Montgomery's upside is tremendous, and he's been compared to former Phillie Jayson Werth at the same age.

#14 - San Francisco Giants: Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land (Pa.) HS

Montgomery has elite speed, a strong arm from the outfield, and raw power at the plate. He needs to refine his offensive skills and clean up his swing to get to his power consistently. Montgomery has a high ceiling but comes with some risk.

14. Giants: Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (Lewisberry, Pa.)

One of the toolsiest players in the entire class, albeit with some concerns about swing-and-miss, Montgomery is coming up in conversations as high as the back end of the top 10, but it really heats up in the middle of the round.

Baseball America has the Brewers taking a prep outfielder in their most recent update. Benny Montgomery also has a power/speed combination with questions about whether he’ll hit enough to make use of his power and speed.

As a high school hitter with concerns about his hit tool, Montgomery will likely take some time to develop. With the Brewers likely hoping for their farm system to produce some big league help quickly, Montgomery won’t be the best choice if that’s their desire. If the bat comes together, Montgomery could be a 5-tool player, however.

16. Marlins: Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (Lewisberry, Pa.)

Montgomery might have the best all-around physical tools in the Draft, including well-above-average raw power and speed, but he has a hitch in his swing that concerns some clubs.

Pressure is something the 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect could easily have on his shoulders. This season, he's second on the Jaguars with 31 hits and 34 RBIs. As a pitcher, he leads the team with 35 innings pitched and 68 strikeouts, at least 20 more than anyone else on the team.

17) Reds: Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (Pa.)

He has as loud tools as anyone, especially raw power-wise, though not everyone loves his swing and the strikeout risk.

18) Cardinals (Mayo): Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (Lewisberry, Pa.) -- Huge tools and upside, with incredible raw power, all of which comes with some swing-and-miss risk.

A tremendously raw contact hitter with good size and strength. Montgomery has been compared to the likes of a Hunter Pence and Jayson Werth.

Another view from Benny Montgomery's first rocket of the year. Hands are certainly lower and a bit quieter than last summer. Most notably, Montgomery looks a lot more physical. He's up to 205 pounds now. Played last summer closer to 190-195.

Buzz: The term “five-tool player” gets used often when describing players, but it is absolutely the case with Benny Montgomery. The Red Land star outfielder won the Perfect Game All-American Home Run Derby with his power and has flashed some of the fastest 60-yard times of any player in the country. That speed helps make him an elite defender, as does his powerful arm from center field. Add in the discerning eye at the plate and quick-twitch bat, and he’ll be making consistent contact and should be among the league leaders in batting average. Montgomery, a UVA commit, is viewed by many as a future first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and will be absolute must-watch baseball any time he’s up at the plate.

Few prospects in this year's draft class can match Montgomery's power/speed combination. He has shown some of the best raw power in the class, and he's one of the fastest runners as well. He has the tools to be a standout in center field, but right now his swing is not consistent.

Benny Montgomery – Montgomery is an absolute tools goof, with plus-plus speed and power to go along with a plus throwing arm and a chance to be a plus defender in center field. The big question mark is his swing, which is funky and leads to some Hunter Pence comparisons.

Put on an absolute show at National Underclass Main Event establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the class. 6.42 60, 97 from OF, 103 mph exit velo, 84.80 Max Barrel Speed and absolutely mashed in games including a no doubt HR. The loudest overall set of tools at the PG National. Very few have the type of power/speed combo he possesses.

Montgomery is another prep outfielder with well-rounded potential who could propel himself up the board with a strong spring. His charms include a strong arm, above-average speed, and a fast-moving barrel. Montgomery's swing currently features a hitch and a B.J. Upton-like toe tap, both of which should get ironed out between draft day and his arrival in the majors. The raw ingredients are all here, so it's just a matter of him landing in the right system and making adjustments.

Areas To Improve: Refine offensive approach, make more consistent contact,

Tooled up players with rudimentary offensive approaches or plenty of moving parts in the swing have wide error bars and that profile fits Montgomery to a tee. There are very few players in the 2021 class who can compete with his raw power, 70-grade speed, arm strength and outfield defense all together. However, Montgomery will need to give evaluators conviction in his hit tool and that could be challenging against Pennsylvania pitching. There are plenty of moving parts in his setup, so either toning that down or simply showing more consistent contact and putting himself in a better launch position could go a long way.

Minnesota Twins

Benny Montgomery

OF, Red Land (HS)

Whether taking batting practice in a full Borat costume or setting Diamond Kinetics records, Benny Montgomery is unique in every sense of the word. Elite, elite bat speed, foot speed, and raw strength a hyper-athlete, Montgomery is rich in tools but lacks polish. The biggest question surrounding his profile will be whether he'll hit at the next level, though he's worked hard to iron out one of the big hitches in his swing. The Twins take a chance here on an off-the-charts athlete, something they haven't been afraid to do in the past either.

Ht: 6-4 | Wt: 195 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Virginia

Age At Draft: 18.8

Tool for tool, Montgomery might be the most talented player in the 2021 class. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Pennsylvania product immediately stands out with his collection of plus and better tools. He’s got big raw power and manages exit velocities pushing 100 mph when he connects and has consistently been one of the faster runners in the class, clocking multiple sub-6.4-second 60-yard dash times. Montgomery is at least a 70-grade runner and might be a half-grade better, and he pairs power and speed with a strong throwing arm as well. He has a chance to be a premium center fielder and base runner, but scouts are still wondering about his hitting ability. Montgomery is still figuring out his lanky, projectable body at times, and that’s clear in the box. He has a lot of moving parts, including a hand drop that leads to inconsistent timing and contact. The crudeness to his offensive approach has limited his production at the plate and has led evaluators to wondering whether or not he’ll be able to tap into his tools in games at the next level, though he has enough athleticism to make adjustments and refine his game as he matures. The Virginia commit has terrific upside, but he also comes with plenty of risk at the moment.
