Nine Run First Inning Propels St. Lucie Mets to Victory Over Palm Beach Cardinals

Palmer ties St. Lucie record with 3 doubles

JUPITER, Fla. (July 18, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets scored nine runs in the first inning and ran away with a 9-1 win over the Palmer Beach Cardinals in the series finale at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Sunday.

Jaylen Palmer went 3 for 5 with three doubles in the first three innings. The three doubles tied the St. Lucie record for most doubles hit by a player in a game. It had previously been done eight other times, including twice by Pete Alonso it 2017.

Mets starting pitcher David Griffin (1-0) twirled a gem while pitching with a big lead. He held the Cardinals to one run and three hits over 6.0 innings. He walked one and struck out six while throwing an efficient 81 pitches.

Palmer set the tone right away, bashing Levi Prater's first pitch of the game for a double. Jose Peroza doubled Palmer home a couple batters later for a 1-0 lead.

Cardinals second baseman Franklin Soto dropped a popup from Alex Ramirez with the bases loaded to give the Mets their second run. Jimmy Titus followed with a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Jose Colina knocked Prater out of the game with a two-run single that made it 5-0.

Palmer hit his second double of the inning with the bases loaded to plate three for an 8-0 lead. Brandon McIlwain then hit a sac fly to bring home Palmer for a 9-0 advantage.

The Cardinals made four errors in the inning, including two dropped fly balls, a missed play off the wall on Palmer's second double and a throwing error.

Prater (1-4) lasted just 0.1 innings. He was charged with seven runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks.

Peroza and Titus had two hits apiece for the Mets.

The Mets (35-31) are off on Monday. They return to Clover Park on Tuesday to start a six-game home series vs. the Bradenton Marauders. First pitch of Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
