3/15/10

DRAFT: - Jesse Hahn, Matt Purke, Taylor Jungmann, Gerrit Cole... and Kyle Johnson

Jesse Hahn:

3-14 from http://www.hokiesports.com/baseball/recaps/20100313aaa.html  - Behind 12 hits and another strong pitching performance by Jesse Hahn, the Virginia Tech baseball team turned the tables on Maryland and claimed a 13-4 victory on Saturday evening at English Field after getting shut out on Friday. Hahn worked 7.1 innings on the mound and allowed three unearned runs on two hits and three walks, improving his record to 4-0 and lowering his ERA to 0.64. The two singles he allowed were the only balls that left the infield during his time on the mound, and he tied a career-high set just last week with nine strikeouts. He hit two batters and threw two wild pitches. Reliever Ben Rowen worked the final 1.2 innings for Tech and gave up his first run of the season. His ERA sits at 0.90.

Matt Purke:

3-13 from http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/03/13/cbb-visit-no-8-tcu-6-texas-tech-1-3-13-10/#more-24361  - Matt Purke threw a complete game, his first outing over 5.1 innings on the year, giving up only four hits, one run, and striking out eight Red Raiders. Purke’s victory moves him to 2-0 on the year. The Horned Frogs finished the game with a 9-1 victory, moving to 11-2 on the year while Texas Tech fell to 8-8. TCU has won all three games against Tech in 2010, with one remaining tomorrow

Taylor Jungmann:

3-13 from: link  - Taylor Jungmann was even more impressive because after that first inning run by Iowa he proceeded to get 17 out of the next 20 outs by strikeouts. He finished the game with a line of 7.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, and 17 strikeouts while allowing only one walk. Texas head coach Augie Garrido talked about Jungmann’s performance by saying “Taylor Jungmann was brilliant. He dominated the game and he was brilliant. He is an extremely mature pitcher. He pitches around guys when he should. He goes right at guys when he should. He pitches inside the strike zone when he should. If he strikes two guys out and they end up on first base, he still continues to complete. That’s pretty hard to do. His team doesn’t get him a run and that never rattles him one bit. He keeps on competing.”

Gerrit Cole:

3-13 from: http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/03/13/foleys-friday-thoughts : - There was also two more great pitching lines on Friday evening with Gerrit Cole dominating Texas AM Corpus-Christi and Mario Hollands beating Northern Illinois. Cole pitched 7.2 innings while allowing only five hits and giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out 15 batters as the UCLA Bruins picked up a 11-3 victory.

Kyle Johnson:
3-14 from: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/baseball/blog/ncaabb_experts/post/Washington-State-s-Johnson-seriously-injured?urn=ncaabb,227806 - Washington State captured an important 7-5 win over Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon to even the series at 1-1, but the contest was marred by a gruesome injury to Cougars center fielder Kyle Johnson. With the Aggies batting in the bottom of the ninth inning, designated hitter Joe Patterson sent a ball deep into right-center, where Washington State's Johnson and right fielder Derek Jones were both trying to make the catch. Johnson and Jones ran into each other and Johnson's forehead collided with Jones' knee. Johnson was attended to by medical personnel on the field near the warning track for nearly 20 minutes before being transported via ambulance to College Station Medical Center. - UPDATE (Saturday, 9 p.m.): Just got off the phone with Washington State coach Donnie Marbut. Coach Marbut said that Johnson underwent some tests and he does appear to have a bad concussion. However, Johnson is now at the team hotel in College Station and stable. Marbut said that Johnson will be further evaluated and at least will be out a week from game action. It does appear, though, that Johnson will be fine.
