Mejia, Kevin Mulvey, New Injuries, Kelvim Escobar... and Ike Davis

Mejia:

Conventional wisdom says that Mejia’s ETA is mid-2011 but based on the depth of the Mets’ rotation and bullpen, or lack there of, I think there is a serious chance that Mejia will make the Opening Day roster. Jerry Manuel has been very vocal about his need for a reliable set up man in front of Rodriguez and I think Mejia could fill that roll now. Most believe that he needs to spend another year in the Minors, and I think he is a year away from contributing as a starter, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Mets push him now. If he makes the roster I would buy. His fastball will give him some value as a reliever so he won’t hurt you before he moves to the rotation, growing pains aside. I’m not worried that he’ll get stuck in the bullpen because is too talented and as we all know the Mets will need a starting pitcher sooner or later. This may be a chance to get a future front of the rotation starter for the slightly inflated price of a reliever. - link

Kevin Mulvey:

Kevin Mulvey started versus the Rockies on Sunday and turned in two scoreless innings.

It was a weak split-squad lineup that he faced, but Mulvey got off to a nice start as he attempts to overtake Billy Buckner for the final spot in Arizona's rotation. Of course, there could be room for both if Brandon Webb lands on the DL.  -  hlink

New Injuries:

• K-Rod is back, but Fernando Tatis was forced to skip today's trip to Jupiter because of a sore left knee. He's unsure what made the knee flare up -- Tatis said he was fine playing this winter -- but he's hoping a couple days of rest and anti-inflammatory medication will take care of it.

Also, Nick Evans expects to be out for a week because of a strained right forearm. Evans said he can hit,... link

Kelvim Escobar:

Kelvim Escobar (shoulder) was not able to play catch on flat ground last week. "When I tried to throw last week it was weak," said Escobar. "It didn't feel right." Escobar has been sidelined since the beginning of camp due to soreness in his right shoulder. It's safe to say any chance of him being ready for Opening Day -- which was doubtful to begin with -- has now evaporated. Escobar was signed to a one-year, $1.25 million contract in late-December - link

Ike Davis

Also mentioned in the New York Times’ piece is Mets’ first base prospect Ike Davis. He’s been hitting well this spring and the Mets may have to rethink sending him to AAA this season. We all know about Daniel Murphy’s struggles defensively and I don’t think his bat is what the Mets were expecting. Ike Davis is a solid defender and he will be the Mets’ first baseman of the future. Freddie Freeman is generally rated higher than Ike Davis because people believe he has a higher ceiling. But for me Davis has closed the gap if not caught up to Freeman because I think Davis is ready now and his plus power and makeup will make him an above average regular. - link
