Mets 2010 Mash Unit, Jon Niese, More Mejia Bandwagon, BTBS Bay, and Willie

Mets 2010 Mash Unit:

Already, GM Omar Minaya is on the defensive concerning medical issues. The Mets say this year will be better than last because they were suffocated by injuries last season. But where is the evidence the madness will end in 2010?
Minaya can take solace only in the fact it's March 6 and not April 6 -- the day after they are scheduled to have opened the season.

"It's early spring, and the fact [Reyes] is not going to play, because it's spring training is definitely different than it would be in the season," Minaya said - link

Jon Niese:

The Marlins’ Chris Volstad and Mets’ Jon Niese each looked sharp in their spring mound debuts and Florida beat a New York split squad 4-3 in 10 innings Friday.

The Mets played without shortstop Jose Reyes, who was sent back to New York for further medical tests after it was discovered he had a thyroid imbalance.

Marlins outfield prospect Mike Stanton hit a two-run homer off Mets reliever Bobby Parnell in the 10th to give the Marlins the lead.

Mets new outfielder Jason Bay double to right to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the third.
Niese gave up a run in 2 2-3 innings and struck out five. He walked two and gave up three singles. Marlins center fielder Cameron Maybin( walked, stole second and reached third on a first-inning grounder, but Niese stranded him by striking out Jorge Cantu. - link

More Mejia Bandwagon:

All right, so here's the question I was faced with today and I put to you ... the smart ones: Would it be wise to consider keeping Jenrry Mejia with the big club as a reliever if he continues to dominate like he did against the Marlins on Friday? Or would you rather keep him in Buffalo as a starter so that he can one day help out your rotation which needs more help down the road than the 'pen? Goose bumped debut aside, I vote for caution.
Of course, I'm the one who tried to rationalize that Doug Mientkiewicz was a better fit for Shea Stadium than Carlos Delgado in 2005, so what the hell do I know? - link

BTBS Bay:

2010 Player Projections - Jason Bay
about 1 month ago: Jason Bay poses after being introduced as the newest New York Mets baseball player at a news conference Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Citi Field in New York.
Over this weekend, we will look at Jason Bay. I have my own opinion I will share in the comments. - link

Willie Randolph:

The Oakland Athletics’ Ben Sheets was not the only person in uniform here Friday recovering from surgery on a torn right flexor tendon. The other was Willie Randolph. Randolph, the former Mets manager, is in his second season as the bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, who played the A’s at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Randolph threw batting practice for many years as a Yankees coach, but did so less frequently while managing the Mets from 2005 to 2008. - link

Why push Mejia. It wasn't that long ago scouts were saying he is a thrower, not a pitcher (Arizone fall League). Let him go dominate AAA hitters and bring him up as a starter. Same with the other kids, Davis, Thole, Holt, Tejada, Havens, Freddy, Neisen, etc....bring them up when they have nothing else to prove in the minors. I live in Boston and the Red Sox bring guys up when they are ready- only when they are ready!

He's far from ready, but the Mets suck in pitching...

I don't think Jenrry will ever make it as a successful SP... not enough pitchers... he has speed and nothing esle... his curve and change-up are below par and he proved last year, he can't get them over...

he's a closet closer

if that's true, why not burn him out now?
