Mets Sign 18, Ranger Sale,Takahashi, Melvin Colon... and 1st Base

Mets Sign 18:

According to CNBC: "NEW YORK METS Agreed to terms with INF Anderson Hernandez, INF Daniel Murphy, C Omir Santos, INF Nick Evans, OF Fernando Martinez, OF Chris Carter, OF Jason Pridie, C Josh Thole, INF Shawn Bowman, RHP Nelson Figueroa, RHP Fernando Nieve, LHP Pat Misch, RHP Bobby Parnell, LHP Jonathon Niese, RHP Tobi Stoner, RHP Eddie Kunz, RHP Jack Egbert and LHP Arturo Lopez on one-year contracts.

-Good... Figgy and Carter got their ink

Texas Ranger Sale Stalled:

The total sale price is said to hover around $570 million, but that the cash component going to the creditors is less than half that at $230 million. Daniel Kaplan of the SportsBusiness Daily paints part of the picture from Weds.” Closing Bell”: The creditors, who must approve the sale, and MLB, which is acting as an intermediary between Hicks and his lenders, held a conference call last Friday that went very poorly, the sources said. The creditors are seeking a minimum $300M of the proceeds. “They have been at an impasse for weeks if not longer,” one source said. “Baseball has been deluding itself. No idea how long it can go.” MLB declined to comment - link

Hisanori Takahashi:

LHP (NYM): Thirty-four year olds usually don't make this list but Takahashi just arrived in the U.S after signing a minor league deal with the Mets in February. Success can be hard to predict for Japanese pitchers but if his exhibition debut was any indication, the left-hander is going to be pretty darn good. Takahashi, who spent 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, pitched one-hit ball over three shutout innings with six strikeouts on Sunday against the Nationals. Jon Niese and Fernando Nieve are the leading candidates for the #5 spot in the rotation and the bullpen is crowded but he'll have a spot on the 25-man roster if he continues to pitch as he did in his debut. -  link

Melvin Colon:

Mets minor leaguer player Melvin Colon (who the hell is Melvin Colon?)was suspended today for 50 games after testing positive (I’m supposed to be a Mets minor league expert and I never heard of this dude…)for metabolites of nardolone. He is, err, was, a member of the winter DSL Mets.

1st Base:

Lets start at first base. Ike Davis so far has had a pretty good spring. There's no arguing that point. But that doesn't make him the number one first baseman, perhaps not even the number two guy. Daniel Murphy is the Rodney Dangerfield of this club, he gets no respect. Murphy is going to be the number one guy going into the season. Unless Murph cannot produce, I expect to see him at first pretty much all season. Even if Murph goes down, the Mets have both Tatis and Mike Jacobs. I may be wrong here, but I doubt we'll see much of Davis on the 2010 Mets - link
