3/4/10

Mets ST-3 Game Update, Sub .300 OPS, David Wright, Cyclone Parking... and Figgy

Mets ST-3 Game Update:

-former Met, 100-mph thrower Evan MacClane, starts the game for the Cardinals.

-OF Gary Mathews Jr. doubled and scored in the first inning, on Luis Castillio's RBI single...

-David Wright hits 2-run homer...  Mets up 3-0

Sub .300 OBP:

Last season, there were only 8 major leaguers with sub .300 OBP and slugging percentages above .400 in at least 400 plate appearances: Rod Barajas, Mike Jacobs, Jimmy Rollins, Clint Barmes, Chris Davis, Hank Blalock, Miguel Olivo, and Bengie Molina. The Mets have two, tried to sign a third, and have another player, Jeff Francoeur, who may very well accomplish this feat. I'm not sure what this says, but it's got to say something about the team's thinking. Or maybe it just says that 3 of the 8 were catchers, and the Mets needed a catcher. - Adam Sekellick

David Wright:

Wright hit 10 home runs last year in what was, for all intents and purposes, a full season of playing time. That's right, 10! After averaging 29 dingers per season from 2005-08, Wright’s bopping of just 10 long balls would be akin to Ichiro batting .264, Roy Halladay posting 4.47 ERA, or the Royals acquiring a batter whose OBP exceeds .319. It just isn’t bloody likely, and it can drive fans batty searching for causes. Was it the new Citi Field and its dimensions (not likely, as park effects would account for a dropoff of, at most, three or four homers)? A change in swing mechanics or in hitting philosophy? A lingering injury? Or, perhaps, a decision to mail it in until Omar Minaya signed more backup catchers? Whatever the cause, it was particularly peculiar that he sustained talent in the midst of being sapped for power, as Wright hit .307/.390, a BA and OBP virtually identical to his PECOTA forecast, but with a .447 SLG that more closely resembled what one might expect from teammates Daniel Murphy or Fernando Tatis. - link

More Cyclone Parking:

This summer, there will be more parking available for Cyclones fans than ever before, thanks to a new agreement that will limit non-baseball parking at MCU Park on Cyclones game days.

The MCU Park parking lot will be closed to anyone without a Cyclones game ticket four hours prior to the start of weekend games -- Saturdays at 2, Sundays at 1 -- and will limit the number of non-Cyclones-game attendees' cars allowed to park.

This change may provide as many as 600 additional spots for Cyclones fans – link

Figgy:

Maybe I shouldn’t be making such a big deal about Figgy. But I like the guy and am rooting for him. Last year despite pitching well for the Mets he was twice designated for assignment and subsequently not picked up by a single team. Each time he returned to AAA Buffalo and continued to pitch well. It’s hard to believe that there was not one major league team that needed Figgy to fill in for awhile and start a couple of games, while getting paid the league minimum. As a 5th starter, I’d take a wild guess that he would be better than 33% of other teams 5th starters.

I want Figgy to play for the Mets in 2010. Having grown up a Mets fan, I think he’d like to continue playing here too. And I think he’s good enough to make the team as the long reliever if not the 5th starter. However, he could end up being the odd man out in a numbers game with Jon Niese, Fernando Nieve, and others all vying for the last spots on the staff. It’s likely that Figgy will be let go again. It’s a shame because at the age of 35 he is pitching the best baseball of his career. - link
