Mets ST Game 2 Update, F-Rod, A-Rod, AWL... and Perjury

F-Rod:

The Mets announced yesterday that Francisco Rodriguez’s pinkeye still was not cured and to avoid contagion, he needed to stay away from the team for at least three more days. But here is the problem: He already had been quarantined for this virus earlier in spring and then permitted back for the three days before yesterday. As part of trying to distance themselves from the 2009 medical follies, the Mets’ big motto this spring is “Prevention and Recovery.” But how does allowing a contagious player around the team fit “Prevention?”  -  link

A-Rod:

"Jake Peavy is planning a prison break. He wants to spring Adrian Gonzalez from the Gaslamp Gulag known as Petco Park. He wants to free the oppressed slugger from the cruel, unusual and harshly low-profile punishment of playing for the Padres. He thinks Chicago could be A-Gon's kind of town, has actively lobbied White Sox management to make a deal and says he is "disheartened" by the state of his former ballclub. "Adrian wants to win — I can tell you that," Peavy says of his ex-teammate. "If it means leaving San Diego, he won't think twice about doing that. I can promise you that." Inasmuch as the White Sox won exactly four more games than did the Padres last season, Peavy might be guilty ..."  (according to one Mets source, the Mets have called about him yesterday...) - link

AWL:

The Arizona winter league has signed or offered professional contracts to 55 players. The only major league team that offered a contract to a player was the New York Mets.  The Mets signed shortstop Rylan Sandoval to a contract. Ryan hopes to take the path of Scott Richmond and Sergio Romo, who were also signed out of the Arizona Winter League and made their respective major league rosters. He had originally been drafted by the Mets in the 30th round in 2007 but chose to go to Long Beach State instead. While playing for Chabot College as a freshman he was voted the California Junior College player of the year -

Mets ST Game 2 Update:

0-0, middle of 2nd inning,,,

one hit by Mets - OF Kirk Neuwenhuis...

SP Misch:   1.0-IP, 0-ER, 0-H, 1-BB

Perjury:

Everyone is a spin doctor in the latest saga involving top-end athletes, health practitioners on the cutting edge of healing and performance enhancement, and the authorities attempting to ferret out criminal activity while generating headlines.

The Mets' Carlos Beltran met with federal investigators in February. "I have nothing to worry [about], nothing to hide," Beltran said.

But athletes who speak to federal authorities ought to stop the spin and be truthful – or risk perjury charges. It’s how federal investigators operate. The alleged cover-up is worse than the crime, the gotcha moment. Ask Barry Bonds(notes) or Marion Jones or Tim Montgomery or Miguel Tejada(notes). Check back with Roger Clemens(notes) in another six months. Even if a jail sentence is avoided, lives are turned upside down. - perjury
