Tejada, Ollie, Practice, Pelf's Splitter... and Royals All Decade Team

Tejada:

At 19, Tejada arrived at Binghamton last spring as the youngest position player in Double-A baseball. He stayed the entire season at Binghamton and hit .289 with five homers, 46 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. The Mets believe he is ready defensively — Tejada is regarded as the best defensive infielder within the organization — but still question whether he can hit enough. In 2008, his first full professional season, Tejada hit just .229 with two homers and 37 RBIs for Single-A St. Lucie. In addition to the rise in Tejada’s offensive numbers last season, the Mets like the fact his strikeout total dropped from 77 to 59. - link

Ollie:

The Mets will want to see better results from the lefty today, when he gets the ball against the Tigers at Tradition Field. Perez was scheduled to face the Twins yesterday in Fort Myers, but the game was rained out. Perez, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Johan Santana all made their first spring start over the last week, and only Maine was convincing. Perez struggled against the Nationals on Sunday, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over three innings. But pitching coach Dan Warthen liked the fact the erratic Perez, in his first game since right knee surgery last August, walked just one batter and threw 33 of 49 pitches for strikes  -  link

Practice:

On the field, they looked bad. A lot of swings and misses before the rain delay. Pagan had a chance to set himself correctly on Cameron's sac fly, but instead he caught it flat footed and had no chance to challenge Pedroia at the plate. That bothers me. I don't think Matthews makes the same mistake. They gave up 3 runs in the first, and nobody was surprised. In fact, no fans were even yelling or heckling. This was new for me. FYI, I was sitting 3 rows back from the Mets bulllpen. They are lifeless at the plate. Castillo could put you to sleep, and they look like they have no plan up there. Just as hard to watch as September of last year. With Reyes out for possibly two months, the only reason to watch a game is Wright. -  link

Pelf's Splitter:

On the plains of southern Kansas, Mike Pelfrey was tinkering with a new pitch, hoping for an elixir from the stagnation of 2009. Over the winter, Pelfrey visited his alma mater, Wichita State, and unveiled a split-fastball to complement his sinker-slider combo. "The hitters," Pelfrey said Friday afternoon as he attacked a salad, "are the one that's going to let you know how good it is." So far, the results trend upward. Pelfrey notched three strikeouts with his new pitch on Thursday, a bright spot from an otherwise unremarkable outing against the Boston Red Sox. He gave up three runs in the first inning, then faced just six batters in the second and third  -  link
