Wags, One Set-Up Dude, Salary Lost to DL, 86 Ebbets Club... and Camp Notes

Wags:

Atlanta Braves—Closer Billy Wagner. Others: Takashi Saito, Craig Kimbrel, Luis Valdez.- The Braves signed the apparently-healthy Wagner to become their closer and seem confident he will perform well in 2010. Wagner is an intriguing fantasy option (at a cheap price), but owners should be concerned about his age, injury history, and rustiness. If Wagner falters, former Boston reliever Takashi Saito might be given a chance to close. Luis Valdez and Craig Kimbrel are two young pitchers worth watching, as both could be given the opportunity to close at some point - link

 One Set-Up Dude:

Five weeks from today, by the time "Play Ball" is yelled at Citi Field, Jerry Manuel wants an answer in place. For now the Mets manager can only sit, squirm and wonder who his setup man for Francisco Rodriguez will be. The team's first choice heading into camp, Kelvim Escobar, isn't close to throwing off a mound as he nurses a weak right shoulder (it's expected he won't be ready by Opening Day) leaving Manuel with a list of maybes for the job. Ryota Igarashi, Bobby Parnell and Sean Green are candidates, and Fernando Nieve may eventually join that list if he's not selected as the Mets' fifth starter. Pedro Feliciano is probably too valuable against lefties to warrant serious consideration. - link

Salary Lost To DL:

Since I have already looked at the salary lost to the DL for individual player totals and teams totals from 2002 to 2009, I will now look at the individual teams by year (injury information from Josh Hermsmeyer at RotoBlog.com) . Looking over the lists the only points I noticed was that the Mets and Dodgers did not do a good job of keeping their high priced players off the DL while the Chicago White Sox did an amazing job. Here is the top 20 teams and bottom 10 by total salary lost (link to a spreadsheet with all the teams and years for reference). - link

86 Ebbets Club:

While viewing the Seating and Pricing Chart of Citi Field on Mets.com, I noticed that the Mets have changed the name of the Ebbets Club to the Champions Club. It is also viewable on the ballpark’s A-to-Z Guide.
This only adds to the teams’ efforts of making the ballpark more “Mets” for the fans. I actually had seats on the final game of the season last year that allowed me into the Ebbets Club. When you first walk up the steps of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, it is one of the first things you see. The windows were covered with Ebbets Field and Dodger photos with similar items inside. I am glad to see that it has changed - link

Camp Notes:

Daryl Strawberry still hasn't said "no" to a fan asking for an autograph or picture.

•During a drill focusing on pop ups in the infield and in foul-territory, the infielders let three balls drop in between them...in a row. Yikes.

•The more I watched Jason Bay, the more I got excited thinking about how well Citi Field is going to cater to his hitting style.

Fernando Nieve had some sharp bite on his breaking stuff during his live session.

Hisanori Takahashi is my choice for the 7th or 8th inning role. He keeps the ball very low and has great movement on his breaking balls.

•Remember this name: Eric Neisen
