Q and A: Mack with… Susan Crespo on… Johan Santana

Hey  Mack, have you heard anything on Johan Santana's rehab and how it's going? What do you think the chances are that he'll be ready to start on Opening Day 2012? I feel as if he was never on our team and totally forgot about him until I played the Mets on MLB2K - it's kinda sad. -S. Crespo

Mack:

Morning Susan.

The Santana situation is an enigma wrapped in a riddle.

He basically goes on Twitter every day saying he can’t wait to get back to ST next April. He sounds like a 23-year old who can’t wait to hit 100.

However, there is more to this story.

It’s no big secret by now that the Mets pushed to have him pitch a game at CitiField last September was all a public relations scam. Santana was as ready as Joe D at Metsmerized.

He did pitch a couple of innings rehab for Savannah during their playoffs that didn’t impress anyone (also, it didn’t draw any additional fans to the game) and he begged off pitching a second outing. The official press release said that Johan didn’t want to distract the players from their playoff series. Didn’t sound too welcomed, did he?

No Susan, no one really knows what kind of shape Santana is in. A lot of people always talk about his velocity, but remember, it’s his curve that’s his go-to pitch. The fast ball just sets up the curve, but it does have to sit in, at least, the low-90s.

Out of respect, he is penciled in as the opening day pitcher. We’ll find out more when pitchers and catchers report.

Remember when John Maine reported and couldn’t find the plate unless he slowed down his fastball into the 80s. Remember when Oliver Perez couldn’t hit 90.

Regardless, due to the current state of the rotation, Santana will pitch April as the SP1.

Pray.
