Reese Kaplan asks –
Based upon the statements from Jeff
Wilpon and Sandy Alderson at last Tuesday's
press conference, are you more or less optimistic the club will do what's
necessary to be competitive in 2018?
Mike Friere says –
Honestly, I am no more or less optimistic about 2018 after
the latest press conference because the issue of money and the
"dreaded" budget will not have a huge impact on the upcoming
season. I know that sounds odd, but the
budget going forward will have a greater impact in the 2019 season and beyond
when our core pieces start to hit free agency, etc. The current roster is largely set and the
previously set budget is basically "what it is" for the coming year.
It would be nice to see upgrades at 2B, 3B, in the bullpen (a
lefty or two) and possibly at the back end of the rotation. Despite the speech(es), I think Sandy can get
at least one of the listed positions filled before Spring Training, but not all
of them.
The biggest roadblock for success in 2018 remains the health
of our rotation and our key offensive players........if the team stays healthy,
they will be in the playoff hunt, in spite of the budget.
Eddie Corona says –
This ownership and Front office have been saying whatever
they need to keep Mets fans calm and buying tickets. They Say and present
nothing to instill faith that they are willing to do what it takes to position
this team for sustained winning...
The Construction of the team is always flawed because they
acquire bargain based players and hedging against salaries.. An example of this
is Jay Bruce. Is his contract friendly, I argue
its relatively at best. But it ruins its construction of the team because
Conforto must now play Center field.
They don't have a plan or a vision... they do year to year
enough to barely be relative so that fan will show up on the Field.
David Rubin says –
Jeff and Sandy's words have not moved my confidence scale in
one direction or the other. Actions always speak louder than words and so far
they have continued to shop at the bargain bin, even though they were able to
re-sign Jay Bruce way below what anyone expected
he would command on the open market. That being said, The teams brain-trust
seems more than happy to only search and continue to search for bargains and
will not commit to spending that extra money to even give a megadeal to the
superstars already in place, like deGrom or Thor, so nothing they have said has
given me any reason to believe that they will spend like even a strong middle
market team let alone like one that resides in the biggest market in the world.
I would love to see that change but I will not hold my breath.
Tom Brennan says –
More optimistic...if the inflection point between the need
for talent and the cost of that talent continues to improve and having the
Marlins to beat on like a drum this season, any savvy businessman would want to
add players to increase their chances for the post season, playoff drive
baseball, and the increased attendance that goes with it. Even ownership that is spending-averse.
Mack says –
Extremely pessimistic.
I am convinced that the current team is the one we will start
the season with.
Sure, there might be a few unsigned players invited to the
spring training complex, but, past that, the infield seems set. Matt Reynolds or Jose Reyes will fill in as the fifth outfielder
until Michael Conforto returns, we have our
two-headed catcher, the ‘Dream Rotation’ is healthy, and you can’t close the
gate on how many relievers are being stuffed in the pen.

My guess is their real plan is: hope to stay close, then spend at mid season If in the thick of it. Like in 2015.
Maybe the will surprise us with 1 or 2 more plus moves before opening day.
Pessimistic.
Team still shows no clear direction on what they want to accomplish.
They say they want to get stronger up the middle and are hell bend on giving 2B to anyone not named Flores but, on the other side, they sign Bruce which now means Conforto is the CF which negates the defense.
Indications are they may spend their few remaining pennies on pitching after all (which is what I've advocated since the beginning). If so, then maybe Flores starts against lefties and Reyes against righties?
It would be dumb to sit Reyes vs. LHP. Look at the facts, the splits. It would be counter-productive, I think, to play him against RHP at all.
The plan is to kick the can down the road and hope to compete for WC2. There's no strategy for excellence.
I have a friend who believes the Mets are deeply worried about Conforto coming back -- when, and how well. I don't know, but it's a theory, speaking to their reluctance to move Lagares or Nimmo and the signing of Bruce.
The pen looks thin to me.
Roster looks thin, too.
A lot depends on Harvey. Will he return as force? Or remain a disaster? That's a huge gulf and would make a big difference. Similarly, Wheeler and Matz could also go in extremes.
They will have a real shot at Game 163, but it all feels like an opportunity squandered.
Eddie Corona.....
Keeping the big picture in mind.....
Very well said.
Optimistic with a couple more moves. Need some innings eaters, go try to get 2 of Cashner, Vargas, and Dickey. Callaway and Eiland are supposed to be good at resurrecting pitchers so play to their strengths. DeGrom, Thor, Vargas, Cashner, then whoever is healthy and throwing well from Harvey, Wheeler, Matz, move the others to the bullpen. Bullpen of Familia, Ramos, Blevin, Swarzek, Wheeler, Lugo, Matz. Then go find a good defender to put at 3rd. Give Lagares and Nimmo the chance to platoon in 3rd until Conforto is back.
I've been optimistic all along, so the presser hasn't changed anything.
The biggest factor /question mark is health particularly in the rotation and beyond the new conditioning program there's nothing that can be done about it.
Out of 8 SPs, I'm sure we'll find 5 to fill the rotation, and I'm confident that Callaway/Eiland can get the most of the group.
I'm sure another 2B or 3B will be added before ST, which will mean another player will be cut from the 40.
And rest assured, whoever it is will cause a firestorm here because it should be someone else. 😕
How did those 8+ starting pitchers do last year? Wait, out of 30 teams bringing up the rear at 28 was none other than the NY Mets. In batting average against the NY Mets were 29th with a .273 mark. In walks they ranked 27th.
No, the pitching will be fine. You don't need to do a thing but hope and pray for health. No one ever gets injured. There's no reason to prepare for that eventuality. It's Westworld, Queens edition, where nothing can go wrong...go wrong...go wrong...
Like the giants o-line, nothing has changed year-to-year, the pitching is still broken. Thor back is only difference. No proven depth. Harvey and montero give absolute nothing. Wheeler is a longman. Matz can not be counted on. Gsellman is BULLPEN. Seth Lugo might be a #4 or 5.
And Oswalt probably ain't ready. We need to buy a big#3: L..L.
Is apathetic a viable choice ?
"Apathetic fan" is an oxymoron! 😈
