Five Mets Elect Free Agency

OF Bryce Brentz, P Chris Beck, IF Ty Kelly, OF Matt den Dekker, and P Scott Copeland has elected free agency.

Players that elect free agency at this point in their careers do so because they feel they can find an easier path to the majors from a different team.

I will particularly miss Brentz and Copeland. I never thought that Brentz was given a proper shot by the Mets in 2018 and I had Copeland projected as being one of the members of the Syracuse rotation.

Not surprising - none are guys I would think would have a positive impact in the majors - Ty and Matt did very little in 2018.

It is amazing that den Dekker will be 32 next August - time flies.

I really think they should sign Brentz to be the 5th outfielder. I hope the new GM sees a fit

Zozo -

Brentz is now gone.

The Mets will start the season with Conforto, Nimmo, Lagares, and Bruce in the outfield.

Bruce will share early duties at first with Wilmer.

The 5th guy will come from outside the org. or Dom Smith

He can still sign with them. You never know

Hopefully, we get some "new blood" on the roster. I know I am in the minority, but I still view CF as a position of need (Lagares isn't reliable and who knows when Cespedes will return).....I want Nimmo in LF, Conforto in RF and Bruce on my bench, so a free agent or trade acquisition for a lock down CF'er would be nice.

I am worried about Dom Smith - his was a pretty bad season. 2019 camp will be big for him - he has little or no trade value, so I think he gets another chance in spring games - but he has to be a lot better.

Why not just keep Dominic Smith at 1st?

Keep him in AAA when/if Alonzo is proves himself a better choice on the major league roster.
If neither proves to be major league ready one can be in AA.

It just makes the system stronger and better capable of absorbing injury needs.

Novel idea: if the Mets are looking for outfielders, go get outfielders instead of forcing players that do not have the natural skill set.

Mike -

I totally agree about CF.

Hopefully, our new GM will agree with us

I don't see much on the free agent market.

Per MLBTR:

Jarrod Dyson (35)
Billy Hamilton (29)
Aaron Hicks (30)
Austin Jackson (33)
Juan Lagares (31) – $9.5MM club option with a $500K buyout
Starling Marte (31) – $11.5MM club option for 2020 with a $2MM buyout
Leonys Martin (32)

Bob -

I agree that Smith's future might be as a AAAA first baseman in Syracuse. He would be good insurance in case Alonso was hurt down the road.

Still, I would have him as my OF5 and backup 1Bman on opening day until Alonso was called up.

Dominick Smith is reminding of the old "can't fail" prospect. Lasting Milledge.

Has Smith forced his way into the roster yet?

I can't say that he has.

Tom Brennan said...

Viper, Lastings Milledge in his career is ahead of Smith, so far...let's hope that changes

We can't overlook the fact that Yo is expected back im mid-season. That may or may not happen, but the #5 OFer should be a guy who is expendable. Signing a guy who is a "quality" player could turn out to be a total waste of money.

Someone like Jackson would be a fit. Not necessarily AJ, but someone comparable.

Getting back to the Mets FAs listed, I wonder which if any of them were on the 40,so we clear spots there before the Rule 5.

I don't think adding talent should ever be thought of as a waste of money on the major league level.

Betting on a repeatedly injured player to be back and productive after a 10 month recovery from surgery is not a recipe for success either.

Build the team you want. If and when Cespedes comes back productive, deal with that situation then.
