CHARLESTON, WV – Zach Rheams drilled his first homer in 2019 and stretched his hit streak to five straight games on Tuesday in West Virginia. The Fireflies fell to the Power, 10-3, at Appalachian Power Park.

Rheams blasted eight homers with the Fireflies in 45 games last season. That was on the heels of a successful college season at Texas Tech where the lefty slashed  17 homers. The Texan is hitting .286 for Columbia through 11 games this year.

The story was the home run on Tuesday. Four were hit with each team blasting a pair. In addition to Rheams, Wagner Lagrange drilled his first homer of the season. Lagrange tattooed a laser over the left-field wall in the ninth. The outfielder finished with two hits.

Shervyen Newton also notched his first hit of the season on Tuesday. The 19-year-old switch-hitter roped a double and walked twice at Appalachian Power Park.

AKRON, OH – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies racked up 16 hits, including eight for extra-bases, in a 11-6 win over the RubberDucks on Tuesday night at Canal Park. Every Rumble Pony position player collected at least one hit and five players compiled multiple hits in Binghamton’s fifth straight win. Binghamton starter David Peterson struck out eight and pitched into the sixth inning to earn his first career Double-A victory.

One night after scoring 16 runs on 17 hits, the Rumble Ponies picked up where they left off. The first five hitters Binghamton sent to the plate against Sean Brady reached safely in a four-run first inning. Mike Paez, Patrick Mazeika, and Ali Sanchez highlighted the game-opening clip with three straight run-scoring doubles on three consecutive pitches.

Binghamton blew the game open and chased Brady from the game with an onslaught to start the fourth inning. After the first two reached, Sanchez yanked a two-run double down the left-field line and Will Toffey followed with a run-scoring single up the middle. Alfredo Escalera and Andres Gimenez capped the six-run inning with RBI singles against reliever Ben Krauth.

The Rumble Ponies received contributions from every part of their lineup. Mazeika, Sanchez and Braxton Lee each supplied a pair of doubles on Binghamton’s big offensive night. Sam Haggerty registered his third three-hit game of the season, highlighting his effort against his former team with an RBI triple in the third inning.

The Ponies’ second straight offensive explosion pushed Peterson to his first victory as a Rumble Pony. The southpaw struck out a season-high eight over 5-2/3 innings in his third start of the season. Peterson (1-1) allowed eight hits, a majority of which were seeing-eye singles. Akron designated hitter Li-Jen Chu hung the only significant blemish on Peterson’s tab with a two-run homer in the fourth.

Brady (0-2) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits over three innings in the loss.

Syracuse, NY (April 23, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets picked up their second shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The win extended Syracuse’s winning streak to five during the homestand, which is the second five-game winning streak for the Mets this season.

Syracuse (12-7) scored the game's first run four pitches into the bottom of the first inning. Grégor Blanco led off against Buffalo starting pitcher Jacob Waguespack and homered to center field for a 1-0 Mets lead.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning. Travis Taijeron walked with one out, and Rajai Davis came in as a pinch runner. Davis then stole second base. Danny Espinosa followed with a ground ball to short. Andrew Guillotte's throw to first was high, allowing Davis to come around and score on the error for a 2-0 edge. 

Buffalo (4-11) was held off the board all day, never putting more than one runner on base in an inning. Drew Gagnon was again stellar for the Mets, allowing only three hits in seven scoreless innings, with six strikeouts against two walks. Gagnon lowered his ERA in three Triple-A starts this year to 0.51. Arquimedes Caminero retired all five batters he faced, and Ryan O’Rourke struck out the only batter he saw to end the game.

The Mets and Bisons will have a quick turnaround, returning to NBT Bank Stadium for game three of their four-game series at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday morning. RHP Zach Lee is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite RHP Sean Reid-Foley for Buffalo.
