Saturday,
4-20:
A+ St.
Lucie activated OF Jacob Zanon from the 10-day
IL. The 2016 15th round pick hit .206 in 233-ABs last year for St.
Lucie, but was off to a terrific start this season for the same team before he
hit the IL (15-AB, .400).
Wednesday,
4-24:
A-Columbia
transferred last year’s ‘number on with a bullet’ starter, Jaison Vilera, back to Brooklyn to work on what he has
seems to have lost this season. Last season, for Brooklyn, the 21-year old
through 13 starts and put up a impressive stat line of 5-2, 1.83, 0.98;
however, everything went sour this year for the Fireflies where he has thrown
in four games (three starts) and his stat line is 1-2, 8.44, 1.94. I expect we won’t
see him again until the Cyclones season starts. Damn it. I was really high on
this guy.
To
replace Vilera, A-Columbia called up from Low-A Brooklyn, pitcher Allan Winans. The 23-year old Winans was the 17th
round pick in the 2018 draft out of Campbell University (CA). He pitched in 11
professional games last year after school, for Kingsport, and posted a stat
line of: 0-1, 4.66, 1.34. It will be interesting to see where they slot Winans.
He was a four-year starter in college.
And then
again, A-Columbia activated SP Christian James off
the injured list. The 20-year old had a nice year last season, pitching for
three teams (Brooklyn, St. Lucie, Binghamton). His combined stat line was 4-3,
1.90, 107, 15-starts. Very impressive, but only a 6.02-K/9 ratio. He has
started for three more games this season going into Thursday night's Fireflies starts.
His 2019 line: 0-2, 5.40, 1.58, 13-IP, 15-K (10.13-K/9). Love the new heat but
he needs to return to mastering his release points.

4-25
Relief
Prospect, Ryley Gilliam, was called into the St.
Lucie manager’s office and was handed a ticket to Binghamton (with a stop in
NYC to pick up a slice). As we all know, he is everything we asked for since
the Mets drafted him fifth in the 2018 draft. He had 17 appearances last year
for Brooklyn, posting a stat line of 0-1, 2.08, 1.38, 17-IP, 31-K (16.10 K/9),
and a 6.75 BB/9 that needed work. He was fast tracked this year to Lucy where
he only gave up three runs in 10.2-IP (all in his last appearance). The SO/9
remained high (13.50) while the BB/9 showed huge improvement (1.69 BB/9).
Gilliam wasn’t available for last night’s game but I expect he will be tonight.
What is interesting is how they will use him with their current closer ace, Stephen Villines. Will they go 1-2 on the back end or
will Villines get a call into the B-Mets manager’s office? News at 11.

Great for Gilliam - I hope that Matt Blackham gets promoted to AAA to make space for him.
Jaison Vilera - I figured it out - the same initials as Jason Vargas. Time to regroup and move forward.
Zanon is a low power swifty - let's hope he stays healthy and gets on a roll. He didn't in 2018.
Winans had a very good pen debut with Columbia yesterday.
