You see....Professional pitchers are hard to find in Metsville.
Chris Flexen finagles yet another opportunity to pitch for the Mets due to deGrom's IL status.
Flexen has now pitched in 19 Mets games in his career, totaling 58.2 innings. He has allowed 63 runs.
SIXTY THREE.
My opinion?
He should not get the chance, as a Met, to give up a 64th run.
After hitters stopped flexin' their muscles hitting off of Flexen, Luis Avilan replaced him.
In 8 innings, Luis has allowed 10 runs on 14 hits and 4 walks. I wonder how he'll do in Syracuse?
Next up: Jacob Rhame.
Rhame pitched 1.1 innings, allowing a run on a hit and 2 walks.
In his MLB career, he now has 40 outings, 42.2 IP, and has allowed 10 homers and 31 runs. He is not pitching like a major league pitcher.
Finally, Paul Sewald, who entered the game 0-13 in his career. He could not lose, since the Mets trailed by 7, so that much was a relief. He only allowed a run, and his 5.19 career ERA seems ace-like compared to the 3 who preceded him.
Sadly, the Mets (besides the aforementioned 4 pitchers) pitching woes don't stop there.
The Mets also have 8 other pitchers in the young season (getting older by the day) who, in 115 combined innings, have allowed a gosh-awful 85 runs.
If you asked me two years ago if such collective dreadful Mets pitching was possible, I would have laughed and walked away from you.
After all, this team in 2015 had a 3.43 ERA.
But is it true. Pitching (other than Diaz and Jake, by and large) has indeed been dreadful.
Shockingly, the Mets in 20 games have allowed 127 runs (6.35 runs per game) and sport an ERA of 5.61.
The 40-120 Mets of 1962 had a 5.04 ERA.
The 1961 Yankees that won well over 100 games used 15 pitchers.
The Mets have already used 17, with 142 games left.

Maybe the Mets should sign Gio Gonzalez, Dallas Keuchel, or Craig Kimbrel.
Or all three.

Meanwhile, Jeff McNeil becomes the fastest Met ever to get to 100 hits. Will Todd Frazier slow his ascent to 1,000 hits?
I often feel like the Yanks are a lucky team - not just good, but relative to the Mets very lucky.
Even with all their injuries, consider who they've played against so far, and who they will soon be playing. If they faced a schedule like the Mets have, they'd be in very deep doo doo.
They've played Baltimore (6.40 ERA), Tigers (scoring 3.0 runs per game), KC (5.35 ERA), Red Sox (5.81 ERA), CWS (5.54 ERA), and will soon be facing LAA and the D Backs (both with 4.90 ERAs) and the Giants (2.9 runs per game).
Only Yanks' opponent Houston is playing like a strong team, and they lost all 3 to them. The other 8 teams named above deservedly have a combined record of 67-99.
The Mets' first 37 games have been/will be against teams with a combined 80-84 record, but 31 of those 37 against teams whose records currently are 66-57. So the Mets have faced - and will soon face - teams of much greater difficulty.

This is just something we are going to have to wait out.
The 2019 rotation is what it is and what's going on right now is a red flag regarding giving any more of these guys extended contracts.
There is some help in Binghamton but not untli next year.
We've mostly seen the last of Flexen. Process of elimination.
Yes, Flexen has been awful, but let's not be too "in-FLEX-ible" here. If he gets through 15-20 starts at Syracuse with fine #s, he can still earn another shot.
Of the 3 vets you mentioned, only Gio is ready, having had regular starts in AAA. The others, aside from being much more costly in contract demands + draft picks, would take at least a month to be ready.
We don't know yet if the Yankees will promoye or release him, but if it's the former maybe we can work a trade. We have little use for Frazier, and they have holes to fill. Would that be a fit for both teams?
Gio for Frazier? Could happen, if in fact a trade is necessary. Mets are averaging 5.5 runs per game, so I would be loathe to "Fix" the offense by adding Frazier.
