Buffalo 5 - Syracuse 4

Syracuse, NY (April 24, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets’ five-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-4 loss to the Buffalo Bisons in front of a booming and energetic Education Day crowd of 3,802 at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets overcame a three-run deficit to tie the game at four before the Bisons scored the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning.

Syracuse (12-8) found another first-inning run to take an early lead. Rajai Davis led off with a double against Sean Reid-Foley, and two batters later, Travis Taijeron doubled for his team-leading 15th RBI and a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo (5-11) grabbed the lead with a four-run fifth. Roemon Fields singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. grounded a single up the middle to score Fields and tie the score, 1-1. From there, Vladimir Guerrero singled and Cavan Biggio launched a three-run home run to right on the first pitch he saw from Zach Lee for a 4-3 Bisons advantage.

The Mets would not let the top of the fifth stand unchecked. In the bottom of the inning, Tim Tebow and Davis both walked with one out, and Carlos Gomez singled to load the bases. Adeiny Hechavarría followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Tebow and cut the score to 4-2. Taijeron walked to re-load the bases, and Tomas Nido hit a two-run single to left to plate both Davis and Gomez and tie the game, 4-4.

The Bisons took the lead back in the seventh. Guerrero hit his third home run of the season with an opposite-field homer to right-center field off Tim Peterson to push the Herd back in front, 5-4.

Syracuse did threaten in the ninth. Tim Tebow and Rajai Davis each singled to start the inning against Buffalo reliever Derek Law. Carlos Gómez tried to get a sacrifice bunt down, but Law turned and got the out at third base on the lead runner. With runners on first and second, Law struck out Adeiny Hechavarria, but both runners moved up on the strike-three pitch in the dirt. With the runners at second and third, Taijeron hit a hard line drive to right field, but it was caught to end the game. 

Syracuse looks to win the series Thursday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Corey Oswalt is scheduled to start for the Mets opposite RHP David Paulino for the Bisons.
