2019 Draft - Mets Pick 24.718 - P Hunter Barko- The Bolles School (FL)

With the 718th pick (24th round) in the 2019 draft, the Mets picked:

The Bolles School (FL) pitcher, Hunter Barco.

PG - Hunter Barco is a 2019 LHP/1B with a 6-4 208 lb. frame from Jacksonville, FL who attends The Bolles HS. Square shouldered tall and very projectable athletic build. Mid to low 3/4's arm slot, significantly lower slot than last October, lands open with his front side, works quickly and attacks hitters.

Steady low 0's fastball, pretty much sat at 91 mph, outstanding late running and sinking life to all quadrants, can back door a fastball glove side intentionally, throws to spots and likes to come inside to right handed hitters. Change up has the same type of life and is a quality pitch. Slider has a short cutter-like break, not able to get over it as well as from a higher release slot. Left handed hitter with a smooth and easy swing, drifts into contact, looking to drive the ball in the air. Smooth defensive player at first base. Very good student, verbal commitment to Florida. Selected to play in the 2018 Perfect Game All American Classic.

News4Jax The other big news from here to Gainesville involved Barco, a presumptive first-round selection, who went undrafted through the opening two days. That was somewhat of a surprise considering that Barco was a consensus top 50 prospect entering the draft, but it's not all that unheard of.

Highly rated players fall or go unselected in the draft all the time, with signability often the main issue for that. Seminole pitcher Matt Allan, also a Florida signee, was a consensus top 20 prospect who dropped to the Mets in the third round due to reported signability concerns.

Barco, a 6-5 lefthander, said on Twitter that he was looking forward to getting down to Gainesville and starting with the Gators. He'll likely have the chance to continue being a two-way player for Florida, pitching and hitting. His 2019 season at the plate for Bolles was the best of his career.

If the gambit does not pan out and Allen does not sign, then the Mets have a ton of $$ to throw at Barco. Should be interesting to see what unfolds.

Conversation online about the Allen and Barco picks:

Is there a separate pool of money for 3rd day picks?

No. Teams can spend up to $125K on each pick in rounds 11-40. Any amount over $125K counts toward the total pool money a team has based on their Round 1-10 picks.

If the mets lost out on Allen ... that means they would be WAAAYY under in terms of how much of that pool money they spent ... so they can't move *some* of that money to the 3rd day??

Correct. Not signing Allan would be worse for their chances at signing Barco than signing Allan at a major discount.

I'm just wondering what the point was to drafting Barco ... i figure it as a HEDGE in case they didn't sign Allan .. but not sure

Quite frankly, I don't know what the point was either.

FYI

Barco's team was elliminated in playoffs last night. Barco pitched well in his last HS game.

Now on to the negotiations
