METS MAKE COACHING STAFF CHANGES

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 20, 2019 – The New York Mets today announced that the club has relieved pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernández of their duties. The club has named Phil Regan, the interim pitching coach, Ricky Bones the interim bullpen coach and Jeremy Accardo to the newly-created role of pitching strategist.

Regan, 82, had been serving as the Mets minor league assistant pitching coordinator since 2016 after spending 2009-2015 as the pitching coach for St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League. He was previously the manager of the Baltimore Orioles during the 1995 season and was the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians in 1999 and for the Chicago Cubs from 1997-1998. He was the pitching coach for Team USA in the 2000 Olympic which won the Gold Medal. Regan pitched in the majors over 13 seasons with the Tigers, Dodgers, Cubs and White Sox, compiling a 96-81 record with a 3.84 ERA. He was a National League All-Star in 1966.

Bones, 50, began this year as the pitching coach for St. Lucie (A). He was the Mets bullpen coach from 2012-2018 and had previously served as a coach in the Mets minor league system for six years from 2006-2011. Bones was the pitching coach for Team Puerto Rico during the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic. He pitched 11 years in the majors with the Padres, Brewers, Yankees, Reds, Royals, Orioles and Marlins, going 63-82 with a 4.85 ERA and was an All-Star in 1994.

Accardo, 37, was in his first full season as the Mets minor league pitching coordinator. This is his third year in the Mets organization. He was the bullpen coach for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coach League in 2018 and spent 2017 as the pitching coach for the rookie-level Gulf Coach Mets. Accardo spent parts of eight years in the majors with the Giants, Blue Jays, Orioles, Indians and Athletics, going 10-20 with 38 saves and a 4.30 ERA.

Dave Eiland was not the problem - the problem is shoddy defense, a juiced ball - a poorly constructed pen (due to ownerships unwillingness to spring for major upgrades other than Familia ) . Unfortunately he’s the scapegoat - and it’s unfair . Kinda like when Apodaca (or was it Wallace was fired )
