A man
named John Sickles use to have a great series of top 30 prospects for all the
major league teams. For some reason, the feature was discontinued.
John
would rate the players with the A through F system, using A as a can’t miss
prospect, B a probable, C a possible, and F… well, you can figure out what F
meant.
The last
top Mets prospect list he had led with a sub-headline of “ if you love C+
prospects than you are going to love the Mets.
Nothing
much has changed. We have a couple of A/A- guys, a handful of B+/B/B- players
and the rest are C+.
Was John
right? Well, he did not have Jeff McNeil’s name come up until he ended the
series with players in one paragraph entitled ‘honorable mention’.
Here’s my
current list of my top 25. I will post this in five separate posts, starting last
week for numbers 21-25.

20. RP Franklyn Kilome –
Remember this guy? This looked like a great deal when they got this guy from
the Phillies. He had a terrible season in 2018 for them but improved his K%
from 18.8 to 27,1, while lowering his BB% from 11.6 to 6.5. But then TJS put
him on the shelf for 2019. He’s turning 25 so I move him to a relief role.
Hopefully he keeps his 95 velo when he returns.

19. C Endy Rodriquez –
Rodriguez is also ranked higher than other catchers that made this list (Mazeika) and
even some that other pundits list as a Mets prospect (Ali Sanchez). The 19/yr.
old hit .293 for the GCL team. He also plays first. Hint. Hint.
18. RP Andrew Mitchell –
I am not, in general, a fan of ranking relief pitchers on a prospect list. I’m
from the school that most great relievers are first failed starters. That being
said this reliever has pitched for 5 Mets teams in two pro years and has a
combined 1.87/1.13, with an 11.82 SO/9.

17. OF Quinn Brodey –
I’m still waiting for Brodey to break out of the pack. The 23/yr. old hit 11
home runs in his last year at Stanford in 2014. Since then, he has hit a total
of 10 in his whole professional career. He has to step up this year.
16. SP Jordan Humphreys –
Ranking Humphreys isn’t easy. He started out as a top pitching prospect only to
hit the skids with TJS. I’m assuming he will return to the video game numbers
he put up before the injury and could be a dark horse rotation starter in 2021.

Wow - NONE of your # 16 thru # 20 were in my Top 25.
Humphrey probably does belong, as it seems that he had a good, brief return to action in the AFL after nearly 2 1/2 years of not pitching in games.
Kilome? He wasn't great pre-TJS...maybe he had issues for a long time and can return BETTER now that he is repaired - we can hope.
Endy Rodriguez - he did do well indeed. I wanted a little more playing time to stick him in my top 25. I see him probably in the top 25 next year.
Quinn Brodey? He has to show me something more to move into my Top 25. With 2 1/2 years in, and hitting just .247/.308/.386 career, I am just not very impressed. That said, he showed somewhat more promise in 2019 - but I see him as at best a Mets reserve OF in 2021 at the soonest. And, to his disadvantage, he is yet another lefty hitter in an outfield with a lot of them right now.
Andrew Mitchell? He had a fine 2019 - I like him so far, but not quite enough for my Top 25 - and he will play as a 25 year old in 2020 with just 29 innings of High A ball under his belt. I like that he is a lefty, but I am not sure he throws much above 90. He needs a BIG year in 2020.
Off topic but is anyone else surprised the Nats let Rendon get to FA and risked Strasburg opting out... like wow that's a huge risk on their parts. I love Rendon but if I had a choice I'd go hard after Strasburg. On second thought why not both? O.K. I hear the laughter but really why are only the Yanks mentioned in that "Strasburg opts out" article it is really annoying!

Strasburg has Scott Boras as an agent. Of course he opted out. Boras is Rendon's agent too. Neither will sign early. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Nationals have gotten on well with Boras in the past so they may end up keeping them.
John it's hard to believe they'll pay for both but even losing one is a big blow to them.
Sorry Tom but it's off season dreaming I know but just hoping BVW has a MUCH better off season as another winter of Cano/Diaz, Familia and Lowrie like trades and were dead.
Gary, Cano has to go. Woukd you trade Cano for Price? Their contracts are similar but Price has been better of late. Boston may want a prospect included in
the deal.
