Good Morning. Happy Birthday to Robin Ventura and Jack Leathersich. A-Rod and J-Lo add current and former pro athletes to their buying group, and the Mets open Brooklyn as an Alternate Summer Camp site.

Mets Links:

Mike Puma NY Post: Robinson Cano’s cloudy status has Mets facing roster decision. With only 10 workout days remaining until Opening Day, following Monday’s mid-camp break at Citi Field, the biggest personnel question might be whether the team can count on Robinson Cano and Brad Brach as part of the 30-man roster that will begin the season on July 24 against the Braves.

SNY.TV: 3 Mets lineup scenarios if Robinson Cano is unavailable for 2020 MLB Opening Day. This includes Offense over everything - 2B: Jeff McNeil; 3B: , J.D. Davis; LF: Yoenis Céspedes; CF: Brandon Nimmo; DH: Dominic Smith.  The outfield defense option 2B: Jeff McNeil; 3B: J.D. Davis; LF: Brandon Nimmo; CF: Jake Marisnick; DH: Yoenis Cespedes.  The all defense option - 2B: Luis Guillorme; 3B: Jeff McNeil; LF: Brandon Nimmo; CF: Jake Marisnick; DH: J.D. Davis.

NY Post: Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez Mets bid adds NFL star power. A series of current and former pro athletes have joined the star couple’s bid to buy the Mets, according to ESPN. The list includes Super Bowl champion tight end Travis Kelce, NFL running back DeMarco Murray, NBA All-Star Bradley Beal and Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher.

amNY: C.K. McWhorter and group preparing $1.8 billion bid for Mets pending MLB approval.  “McWhorter — the founder and CEO of the private investment company, CTRL USA — would become one of the youngest owners in professional sports history and would be the only Black owner in Major League Baseball, thus ‘connecting the game of baseball to today’s generation, which is a major incentive to the bottom line of the MLB.’”

As we had on Mack’s Mets yesterday - The Mets opened its Summer Camp Alternate Site at MCU Park in Brooklyn.  They also added seven players to their 60-man Player Pool, including RHP Matt Blackham, LHP Stephen Gonsalves, infielder Jake Hager, RHP Jordan Humphreys, RHP Franklyn Kilome, catcher David Rodriguez and LHP Thomas Szapucki. The Mets 60-man Player Pool now stands at 58.

Mets360.com: Mets Minors: Thomas Szapucki and short season squad.

213 Miles from Shea:  Elliot Teichman has been recalculating his 2020 projections based on the 60 game schedule.  His part 1 of the pitchers included: Dellin Betances, Brad Brach, Jacob deGrom, Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia, and Robert Gsellman. Part 2 included: Seth Lugo, Steven Matz, Rick Porcello and Marcus Stroman.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets mailbag: Brodie Van Wagenen’s future under new ownership. Mike brings up this good point regarding BVW: “…if a deal to sell the team isn’t finalized before the start of the offseason, would they really want to overhaul the front office and conduct a GM search at a time the Mets will be focused on addressing the roster? Also, if the Mets were to make a run deep into the postseason, would that give a new owner pause in instituting changes upon arrival?”

Mets Insider Blog: Record Left in the Dark. Regarding the famous Mets Blackout game that happened 43 years ago yesterday, Jay Horowitz PR Director turned Blogger notes Jerry Koosman “Through 6 stellar innings, the left-hander had amassed 11 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs at Shea Stadium. Koosman felt confident about topping the club mark of 19 strikeouts, set by Tom Seaver in 1970.”

MLB LINKS:

MLB Trade Rumors: MLB, MLBPA Reach Deal On Vesting Options, Roster Bonuses. “…all 2021 vesting options will be worth their full amounts. The counting numbers that would’ve triggered those options in a 162-game season will now be prorated…Roster bonuses, meanwhile, will be prorated, whereas playoff bonuses will be paid out in full.”

Mike Lupica MLB.com: Kings of New York, Mets or Yanks? Let's discuss. “Baseball in New York is always better when both teams are in play. Both are going to be in play very soon. The last time both teams finished in first place was 2006. Could it happen again this time?”

MLB.com: Key questions for every NL East team. For the Mets “Who steps up in the rotation?” And Is “Yo really healthy?”

MLB Trade Rumors: Red Sox Interested in RHP Zack Godley. Godley hit the market when the Tigers released him Monday.

Jeromy Burnitz to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Victor DiazKole Strayhorn and Joselo Diaz on July 14, 2003.

1964
The Cubs overcome making five errors in the top of the third inning and beat the Mets, 4-2. The Chicago miscues, that include shortstop Andre Rodgers and catcher Dick Bertell each committing two and first baseman Ernie Banks contributing to the total by dropping a pop fly, account for all of New York's scoring in the Wrigley Field contest.
1969
At Wrigley Field, Bill Hands and the Cubs edge Tom Seaver and the Mets, 1-0. After the game's last out, Ron Santo jumps up and clicks his heels for the first time, a move the third baseman will repeat each time Chicago wins for the rest of his career.

2001
Bobby Valentine wins his 1,000th career game as a manager when Glendon Rusch and closer Armando Benitez combine to throw a one-hitter in the Mets' 2-0 victory over the Red Sox. Trot Nixon's first-inning bunt single, a result of the New York starter's inability to cover first base, is Boston's only hit in the Shea Stadium contest.

After the last out, Ron Santo jumps up and clicks his heels, igniting a roar from the crowd. The Mets think it's bush.

Say what you will about 30 year old birthday boy Jack Leathersich - he fanned 517 in 327 IP as a pro, and that's something to be proud of. Sit Back Down!

Impressive that MLB has the Mets 6th in baseball offense, 8th in starting...the bullpen, as bad as it has been the past two seasons, could also be top 10. That sort of trio is championship potential. Of course, COVID will have the final say.

You notice that Casey Stengel even looked old as a player in that picture.

Jed Lowrie's brace does not concern me that much, if it protects him until games really count.

Jerry Blevins back as a BNNY commentator, joining Anthony Decker from the 2015 Mets. Looks very different with the longer hair.

Not sure it got mentioned, but ex-Met catcher Devin Mesoraco has taken a job as an assistant coach at the university of Pittsburgh. Best of luck Devin.

Tom, Based on what he did in tge minors, I thought Jack was going to be great in MLB. Like Don Bosch, you never know.

Bob, thanks for the info on Devon Mesoroco. Think the Mets would have been better keeping him as a backup catcher last year and letting Nido play entire season in Syracuse.

John, Leathersich always had his control issues, which hurt him and which seems to have been a factor for Matt Blackham too.

Flaws like Jack's control can be game stoppers for guys.
