John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/24/2020

Good Morning. The Mets 2020 Opening Day is here with Jacob deGrom on the mound. Andres Gimenez, Corey Oswalt, and Hunter Strickland make the team,  and we have Jordany Valdespin highlights in today’s History Links.

NY Post.com: Mets’ Marcus Stroman brushes off calf injury as ‘minor setback’. General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said he didn’t know the grade of Stroman’s tear. “I would leave it to the doctors to try to sort through that,” Van Wagenen said.

NY Post: Jacob deGrom’s approach to Mets’ Opening Day, Cy Young defense. “I think for me, when somebody steps in the box, I want to get them out,” said Jacob deGrom, who estimated he could throw 85-95 pitches Friday.

MLB.com: Opening Day FAQ: Braves vs. Mets. The most significant question regarding the Mets’ lineup construction is whether new manager Luis Rojas will hold to batting Robinson Cano third, as he did throughout camp, or cave to public pressure and shift Canó lower, thereby generating more at-bats for Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis, Brandon Nimmo and others.  For the Braves Matt Adams is expected to start as the DH.

NY Post: Brodie Van Wagenen tones down talk as Mets brace for NL East gauntlet.  “We are going to go wire-to-wire here and not quit,” Van Wagenen said, when asked if the Mets were the team to beat in the NL East.

Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: These Mets aren’t saying ‘come get us,' but they should be NL East contenders despite banged-up rotation. “I’m not going to define success or failure by any one definition,” Van Wagenen said when asked if this year is a failure if the Mets do not make the playoffs. “Our mission is to win now and win in the future. That hasn’t changed.”

Yahoo Sports: Nationals and Yankees throw 2020's first pitch, but the story remains far from the field. “Early Thursday morning, medical staff notified Nats brass that Juan Soto’s Tuesday test came back positive. According to GM Mike Rizzo, it was the only one of the Nationals tests from Tuesday that was positive. The question, then, is whether Soto, as an asymptomatic carrier, inadvertently infected anyone else on the team, or the Orioles, between his last negative test (administered Sunday, results on Tuesday)

MLB Trade Rumors: MLB Playoff Field Expands To 16 Teams For 2020 Season.  ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the top two teams in each division will qualify for the postseason under this format. The seventh and eighth teams in each league will be chosen based on the best overall records of the remaining teams. The Athletic’s Jayson Stark adds that all three first-round games of a series would be played at the higher seed’s home park, thus eliminating the need for a travel day.

Asian Baseball:

DeNa 6 Yakult Swallows 0 Nori Aoki had the day off (Box Score).

Nori Aoki is back in LF for today’s game (Box Score).

All Games games yesterday in the KBO were postponed.

Mack’s Blast From the Past Daily Mets Minor Report 7/24/2012: Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record reports that the Mets are expected to option Lucas Duda to Triple-A in order to clear a roster spot for Matt Harvey. They won't need to make a move for a few days, as Harvey isn't starting until Thursday. It's a little surprising given that Duda has been a fixture in the lineup all season, but he has really struggled this month, batting just .140/.260/.233. Jordany Valdespin is getting his first career start in right field Monday.

1993
Following the game at Dodger Stadium, Vince Coleman tosses an M-80 from a car, resulting in reported injuries to three fans in the Chavez Ravine parking lot, including an 11 year-old boy and a two year-old girl. 1993
In a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, Mets right-hander Anthony Young extends his record losing streak to 27 games. The latest defeat is the result of the hard-luck hurler walking Dave Hansen in with the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning.

Tomorrow, the 22 year-old rookie left fielder will enjoy a 4-for-4 day at the plate when he will collect three singles and a double en route scoring four runs.

1973 - Although not selected, Willie Mays appears in the All-Star Game thanks to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn increasing the player limit so the "Say Hey Kid" can participate in the Mid-summer classic. A record 54 players are used, including Catfish Hunter, who sustains a fractured thumb that will sideline him for four weeks. The A's ace has a 15-3 record at the time.

1978: Pete Rose singles twice, the first time off Pat Zachry, during the Reds' 5 - 3 win over the Mets, extending his hitting streak to 37 games to tie the modern National League record held by Tommy Holmes. Zachry kicks the dugout steps in anger, breaking his foot and ending his season.

1988 - The New York Mets retire number 41 for pitcher Tom Seaver in pre-game ceremonies at Shea Stadium. The Mets then lose to the Braves, 4 - 2.

2015 - A couple of trades are concluded in anticipation of the trading deadline in a week's time. The Mets acquire IFs Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from the Braves for minor league pitchers John Gant and Rob Whalen. The Mets also promote top prospect OF Michael Confortodesignate OF John Mayberry for assignment, and move 3B David Wright to the 60-day disabled list. For Uribe, it's a second trade this year. Rookie Dustin May for Dodgers filled in very nicely for Kershaw. Where is our Dustin May?

The look on Scherzer's face when Stanton hit 96 MPH about 465 feet...HUH???

of course, one game does not a season make. But if that Yank offense has Giancarlo and Judge back firing on all cylinders, they have a killer offense and look like a series-bound team, as do the Dodgers. Of course, their starter ain't chump change either.

For the Mets to have a chance there, they will need Stroman and serendipity.

I am NOT feeling comfy with a fifth starter choice of Lockett, Peterson, or Oswalt. Maybe it is just me. I don't think it is just me.

Tom - you never know wgar will happen. That's what makes sports so great. I woukd feel better if the defense was better.

John, they did keep Gimenez for speed and defense, but you do have to get thru the first several innings with the D we have. Should be interesting. I wonder which player who goes to one knee before the game will have a grounder go thru his legs for his failure to do so during the game.

And hey, the flying Wallenda, Juan Lagares, is back somewhere lurking.
