John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/16/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Jarred Kelenic, Jacob deGrom's MRI on sore back comes back clean, and some Mets bidding intrigue.

Mets Links:

NY Post: The brinkmanship at play during Mets sale negotiations. “People deep inside the Mets sale said Wednesday that two mystery bidders have been revealed, but those bidders tell The Post that they are not bidders at all. Instead it appears names are being leaked to influence the bidding as the process enters a later phase of innuendo and brinkmanship.”

SNY.TV: Mets' Jacob deGrom gets good news after MRI on back. “The MRI did not show anything concerning, a source said to SNY. DeGrom is day-to-day.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets won’t have many day-to-days to waste on Jacob deGrom. “But when a two-week injury is 25 percent of a season, the need to stay healthy has never been greater. Who wins that battle in a shorter season immensely improves their chance to win the NL East.”

SNY.TV: Mets place relievers Brad Brach and Jared Hughes on Injured List. “The team did not give a reason for either player’s designation.”

SNY.TV: 3 reasons why Mets' Edwin Diaz is primed for bounceback season in 2020. His fastball was still elite in 2019; He was unlucky in 2019, and the advanced numbers show it; The ball should be different in 2020.

SNY.TV: Prospect David Peterson prepared for potential role in Mets' rotation: 'I'm ready when that call comes in. “The 24-year-old David Peterson, who had a 4.19 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while striking out 122 batters in 116 innings (24 starts) in 2019 for Double-A Binghamton, has yet to pitch above that level.”  David will be Rule 5 Draft eligible this coming winter.

SNY.TV: Highlights from Wednesday’s intrasquad game: Steven Matz takes the mound and Michael Conforto digs in during Wednesday's Mets sim game.

Mets.com: Anthony DiComo Notes – “A concerning moment unfolded in the middle of Wednesday’s intrasquad game, when reliever Chasen Shreve hit one of the Mets’ top prospects, Andres Gimenez, squarely with a pitch. Giménez fell to the ground and stayed there for several moments, but he eventually rose to his feet and shrugged off a trainer. He took his base and remained in the game.”

NY Post: How Mets’ Jeurys Familia set himself up to bounce back. “During the lockdown, he was able to work out with new arrival Dellin Betances in New Jersey. Specifically, Jeurys Familia has been working on his splitter, a pitch that brought him a ton of success during his first stint with the team, but got away from him last year.”

The Empire Writes Back: Pete Alonso gives you his favorite grilling tips and recipe.

Metsmerized Online: The 1993 Mets: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up.  The 1993 Mets were a bad team, but their off-field troubles were worse than their on-field performance.

Mets Minors: MMN Draft Profile: Eric Orze, RHP. “The righty lost a lot of weight after his two battles with cancer but used the 2019 offseason to get a lot stronger and get himself in baseball shape for 2020. Fortunately for Eric Orze, he was able to resume playing baseball albeit, very briefly. Orze showed off a solid fastball/splitter combination in his 12.2 innings pitched. In those 12.2 innings, Orze had a 17-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a fastball that has touched 96 MPH.”

Rising Apple: Three current players and their most underrated qualities. Jacob deGrom: His defense; J.D. Davis: His disciplined eye at the plate “Davis was only swinging at 26.1% of pitches outside of the strike zone (also known as his O-Swing %), compared to the league average of 31.4%.”; Pete Alonso: His stretch at first base.

MLB.com: 9 burning questions for the 2020 season – 1) What will starting-pitcher usage look like? 2) Doesn’t a 60-game season even the playing field for some teams? 3) How will players handle not having fans in the stands? 4) More specifically, how much would the Astros benefit from having no fans in the stands? 5) Can the Rays overtake the Yankees in the AL East? 6) Is this finally the Dodgers’ year? 7) Will Shohei Ohtani still be a two-way player? 8) Will Bryce Harper take the Phillies to a new level in Year 2? 9) Is David Ross the right man to manage a Cubs team in a win-now mode?

Mack’s Blast from the Past: Daily Mets Minor Report – 7-16-12: AAA – Buffalo: RHP Collin McHugh will make his sixth start with the Bisons today. The 25-year old is coming off his first Triple-A victory as he allowed just three runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings of work against the Yankees on the Sunday before the All-Star break. McHugh has posted a 2.30ERA and 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work over his last three starts.  Matt den Dekker just can’t get off the AAA-pot. 1-7 today, driving his BA down to .209. Also, three more strike outs. That’s 40-Ks in 129-AB. You can do the math. A scout told me today: “he’s just lost out there… this is a completely different player than the one that played in Binghamton (.340) earlier this season.

Kelenic is the Seattle birthday gift that will keep on giving.

That was some nasty Gagnon change, and would make him a success if he could throw it like that all the time, I'd think.

Brach and other reliever on DL - "no reason why" sounds like COVID to me. otherwise, why not give a reason?

After the last two seasons, it is hard to utter the following, byt this bullpen could be great if Familia and Diaz bounce back, Betances is the Terminator again, and of course Lugo and Justin Wilson. That is immense potential - what actual will be is another story.

Jake - hopefully he is 100% for his next turn. Tell Jake it sucks getting old. So stay young.

Tom - I think the Mets have a number of question marks - especially in the bullpen. Diaz? Familia? Betances? The rotoation as well - Porcello? Wacha? now deGrom's back? If a majority come through with good seasons - they will be awesome. If they go 50/50 - they may be good but not a pennant winner.

I miss Collin McHugh.

He and his wife are lovely people that loved the city of Savannah.

You could tell even then that this guy was a future media star.
