John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/11/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Frank Francisco.  It is 9/11.  Last year Pete Alonso spent his own money to buy 9/11 cleats for his teammates to honor fallen first responders, will MLB finally allow Mets to wear the first responder caps today?

Mets Police (8/24/2019): Hey Mets, learn from the Cubs, and WEAR THE CAPS on September 11th.

Rich Coutinho The New York Extra: The Next 6 Games On The Road Could Make Or Break The Met Playoff Hopes. “6 game road trip in Buffalo versus the Jays and then in Philly this team really needs to win 5 of 6 which would put them at .500 going into the final 10 games of the season.”

MLB.com: What would a 3rd Cy do for Jake's HOF bid? “Jacob deGrom, who starts on Friday night against the Blue Jays in Buffalo, N.Y., is likely to get four more starts this year. That would give him an even dozen in this truncated season. He has a 1.69 ERA.”

Amazing Avenue: Where Jacob deGrom stands in the 2020 NL Cy Young race. deGrom has been excellent, and right now he leads National League starting pitchers in ERA.

SNY.TV: Former Met Zack Wheeler injures thumb nail in unfortunate pants mishap. “Zack Wheeler may miss starting against Mets next week because of the incident. And how exactly did this happen? Joe Girardi said that Wheeler hurt his nail while putting on pants.”

Mike Puma NY Post: What it took for Pete Alonso to finally break his Mets funk. “’He is starting to swing the bat like Petey,’ Mets hitting coach Chili Davis told The Post on Thursday.”

MLB.com: Exploring a possible Conforto extension. “If the Mets project Conforto to make roughly $14-16 million through arbitration in 2021, they could tack on five years with an AAV between $20-22 million to reach a six-year, $115-125 million commitment. That would take Conforto through his age-33 season, giving him the freedom to pursue another contract later in his career.”

Steve Serby NY Post: Buck Showalter opens up about Yankees tenure, state of New York baseball.  About Pete Alonso Buck says – “I love his body language, I love the want-to. Regardless of what he’s doing statistically, you can tell that he’s grinding.”

SNY.TV: Mets closer Edwin Diaz is good, whether you like it or not. That Diaz has been very good in 2020 is a fact, not an opinion. “1.89 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 39 strikeouts (18.47 per 9) in 19 innings. Two home runs allowed (0.95 per 9), three saves, four blown saves/leads (more on those below)”

Mike Phillips The Sports Daily: Has Andres Gimenez quietly become the Mets' shortstop of the future?

Rising Apple: Three Positions the Mets could go the cheap route this winter. Writer Tim Boyle suggests Catcher with Tomas Nido and Ali Sanchez; Centerfield (no specific players mentions – “A guy who played like him (Juan Lagares) during his best years, though, wouldn’t cost all that much.); 5th Starter - Seth Lugo has shifted to the rotation. While not incredibly cheap, he’ll make less in 2021 than Rick Porcello is in 2020…Other pitchers who are candidates to join the rotation in 2021 include Robert Gsellman, Corey Oswalt, and Franklyn Kilome.”

Rising Apple: New York Mets starting rotation is a three-man band right now. “Jacob deGrom is the lead singer, guitarist, and the guy that drives the tour bus. He does it all. On bass, we have Seth Lugo who used to sing for the bullpen, but like Dave Grohl, he has found a new role and a new band. In the background hitting the drums is rookie David Peterson.

NJ.com: Mets sale update: When Steve Cohen’s deal to buy the club will become ‘official'.  The New York Daily News reports the sale of the Mets to Steve Cohen is “almost done" and that the hedge fund manager “is expected to secure the necessary three-quarters approval from 23 of 30 owners.”

Baltimore Orioles claimed Charlie Greene of the New York Mets on waivers on September 11, 1997.

1966
In his debut, Nolan Ryan whiffs the first batter he faces, making Braves pitcher Pat Jarvis the first of strikeouts victims the right-hander will claim during a 27-year Hall of Fame career. The 19 year-old Mets right-hander fans three batters during his two-inning Shea Stadium stint in relief en route to setting a major league mark of 5,714 career strikeouts.
1968
Tying a dubious major league record, Cubs right-hander Ferguson Jenkins loses his fifth 1-0 decision of the season when the Mets and Jim McAndrew beat Chicago with a lone run at Wrigley Field. The Canadian-born hurler will finish the season with a 20-15 record but is 20-6 in games in which his team scores a run.

1974
In a game that will feature a record 202 batters, the Cardinals defeat the Mets in the seven-hour and four-minute Shea Stadium contest, 4-3, with Hank Webb taking the loss after making an errant pickoff throw in the top of the 25th inning that leads to the eventual winning run. Redbird Ken Reitz's two-strike, two-out home run had tied the game in the top of the ninth, making the extra innings necessary.
1987
With his 30th stolen base, Mets third baseman Howard Johnson becomes the first National League infielder to become a member of the 30-30 club. The other players in the Senior Circuit to have 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season are outfielders Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Bobby Bonds, Dale Murphy, and Eric Davis.

1987
In the opening game of a critical series against the Mets, Terry Pendleton, with two outs and two strikes, hits a ninth-inning game-tying home run in the Cardinals' eventual 6-4 overtime victory at Shea Stadium. The Redbirds third basemen's dramatic long ball smashes the windshield of New York starter Ron Darling, who had pitched one-hit ball before being forced to leave the game in the top of the seventh due to severely spraining his right thumb fielding Vince Coleman's bunt single in the prior inning.
1997
In a 9-5 Mets victory over the Expos at Shea Stadium, slow-footed John Olerud legs out an eighth-inning three-run triple to complete the cycle. The New York first baseman becomes the seventh player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

2011
Major League Baseball denies the Mets' request to wear caps honoring police, firefighters, and other first responders for their September 11th game against Chicago. The hats worn during the pregame ceremony of the remembrance of the tragic event will be autographed and sold on Mets.com, with the proceeds given to charities through the Mets' foundation.

I read this: Writer Time Boyle suggests Catcher with Tomas Nido and Ali Sanchez; Centerfield (no specific players mentions – “A guy who played like him (Juan Lagares) during his best years, though, wouldn’t cost all that much.); 5th Starter - Seth Lugo has shifted to the rotation. I would not want him to be my GM. Other than Lugo, others are iffy at best. Tome to get real, reliable players in quantities. This team loses way to many games due to poor back ends of bullpens and benches over the years.

I'm glad someone else noticed Edwin is doing well.

I was at apex of Brooklyn Bridge walking into Brooklyn when first tower collapsed. Compared to thousands, I was very fortunate.

Tom - As others on twitter were debating who had the story of Edwin's recent successes first, you were first - by a number of days.

Very fortunate indeed. God Bless.
