John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/12/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Mickey Lolich and Luis Castillo.  Mets get tons of runs for deGrom and wear the first responder caps!  Mets 18 Blue Jays 1.

Mets Links:

Mets 18 Blue Jays 1 Jacob deGrom (W, 4-1) 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 ER, 2 walks, 9 Ks, 102 pitches – 68 strikes; Erasmo Ramírez (SV, 1) 3 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1  walk, 1 K, 30 pitches – 18 strikes;  Dominic Smith 2 for 5 (HR #8 – Grand Slam), 4 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Michael Conforto 2 for 4 (HR #9), 4 runs scored, 4 RBI, 1 walk – now hitting .343; Jeff McNeil 3 for 5, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Wilson Ramos 3 for 5 (HR #4), 3 RBI, 3 runs scored, 1 walk; J.D. (Box Score).

SNY.TV: What’s next. The Mets and Blue Jays face off again on Saturday at 6:37 p.m. in Buffalo. Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.05 ERA) takes the ball for the Mets, while the Blue Jays’ starter is still to be determined.

SNY.TV: The fourth inning was one the Mets won’t soon forget about. With the bases loaded and nobody out, J.D. Davis hit a one-hopper to shortstop, but the routine throw home could not be handled by catcher Danny Jansen, scoring the Mets’ fifth run of the game. Things only got worse for the Blue Jays from there. With the bases still loaded, Dominic Smith demolished a 3-0 fastball from former Mets prospect Anthony Kay for a grand slam, giving Smith 36 RBI on the season.

Brian Joura Mets360: Dominic Smith hit his first career grand slam and Michael Conforto hit a three-run shot and had 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Robinson CanoJeff McNeil and Wilson Ramos each had three hits, and Ramos joined Conforto with the 4-4 Runs-RBIs combo. McNeil got two gift hits, having a pop fly lost by the outfielders in the lights and a ground ball to first where the position player pitching didn’t cover first base.

Metstradamus: “As for Jacob deGrom, he had a couple of hard hit balls off him early, one being a foul ball just to the right of the RF foul pole, and one being a hard RBI single off the wall to score the Jays’ only run of the night…he was always in control and gave up one run in six innings to bring his ERA to 1.67 for the season and put himself in a really good position to win his third straight Cy Young award.”

SNY.TV: Mets' 18 runs more than enough run support for Jacob deGrom with third straight Cy Young in sight.  “They’re pretty high,” Luis Rojas said of deGrom’s odds to win. “I was talking to somebody earlier about it, and this is the best version of Jacob deGrom that I’ve seen. Stuff-wise, demeanor-wise, confidence-wise, he wants the ball, he wants to be out there. He’s pushing for this team to keep winning and getting to that playoff position.”

Newsday: Jacob deGrom solidifies Cy Young credentials in Mets' 18-1 laugher. DeGrom’s primary Cy competition: The Reds’ Trevor Bauer, who has a 1.74 ERA and leads the league with a 0.79 WHIP, and the Cubs’ Yu Darvish, who has a 1.77 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. Each has three scheduled starts remaining in this 60-game, pandemic-shortened season, after which the major awards will be dispensed.

Rising Apple: Dissecting Jacob deGrom’s final four starts on the pursuit for history. Looking ahead, deGrom will toe the rubber against the Toronto Blue Jays [last night], Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Washington Nationals.

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets support Jacob deGrom, honor first responders in win-win day.  It was a winning day all around for the Mets. DeGrom wore an NYPD cap, one of five first-responder lids the team wore (alongside FDNY, Port Authority, EMT and Sanitation), the end result of a year-long — and, truthfully, an 18-year-long — quest to get MLB to come off its stubborn refusal to allow them and the Yankees to properly commemorate Sept. 11.

Call to the Pen: Rob Manfred is still clueless. “It should have been an easy decision for Rob Manfred to let the New York Mets wear first responder hats for 9/11. But somehow, it was not… It got to the point where Jeff Wilpon needed to get involved in order for the Mets to be allowed to wear these hats.”

NY Post: Mets, Yankees wear five different hats to honor Sept. 11 first responders.

Metsmerized Online: Jeff McNeil Is Back.

Amazing Avenue: This Week in Mets Quotes: Tom Seaver 1944 – 2020. We take a break from the usual quotes about the Mets to remember Tom Seaver.

Rising Apple: The emergence of Seth Lugo and David Peterson as capable rotation arms give the New York Mets no excuse to build a cheap rotation in 2021.

ESPN.com: Sources: MLB's postseason bubble plan awaits union approval. “Under the plan, the World Series would start Oct. 20 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and would end no later than Oct. 28. The highest remaining seed in the NL would play its division series in Arlington, while the next-highest seed would face its opponent at Houston's Minute Maid Park. The top seed from the AL would be the home team at San Diego's Petco Park, while the other series would be held at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium.”

Yahoo Sports: The first-place Atlanta Braves may have just avoided a massive loss. All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. had to leave Friday’s contest against the Washington Nationals in the fourth inning after fouling a ball off his leg, but did not suffer a severe injury.

ESPN.com: Fernando Tatis Jr. and MLB's 100 most entertaining players. For the Mets – Pete Alonso #78; Robinson Cano #64; Andres Gimenez #54; Dom Smith #25; Michael Conforto #24.

Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:

Born on this date:
1963
"I look up into the stands, and it looks like Ebbets Field. The Mets are wonderful, but you can’t take the Dodger out of Brooklyn" - DUKE SNIDER, - addressing the Mets fans on his special night at the Polo Grounds.
In a pregame ceremony with his former Dodgers teammates, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, and Ralph Branca in attendance, Duke Snider is honored by the Mets with a special 'night' at the Polo Grounds, which coincidentally marks the last time the Giants, now located in San Francisco, will ever play in their once long-time home in Harlem. The 'Silver Fox,' obtained by the last-place expansion team in April, has recently requested to be traded to a contender.
1965
Mets rookie Dick Selma, in his second major league start, establishes a franchise mark when he strikes out 13 batters. The 21 year-old right-hander goes the distance in New York's ten-inning, 1-0 victory over Milwaukee at Shea Stadium.

1969
The Mets sweep the Pirates in a twin bill when Jerry Koosman and Don Cardwell both go the distance in 1-0 victories. Both starters drive in the only run scored in each game.
1984
Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden breaks the season strikeout record for a rookie when he whiffs Marvell Wynne in the sixth inning of his 2-0 complete-game victory over the Pirates at Shea Stadium. By whiffing 16 Bucs, Doc's total of 251 is six more than Herb Score's 1955 mark.

1985
Both New York teams host their rivals in close pennant races, thanks to a rare oddity of scheduling that has the clubs playing at home on the same day. On Baseball Thursday in the Big Apple, the Mets go into first place with a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, and the second-place Yankees beat the Blue Jays in the ballpark in the Bronx, 7-5, cutting Toronto's lead to a game and half.
2006
The Braves are mathematically eliminated from the division race as the Mets beat the Marlins, 6-4. The New York victory ends Atlanta's streak of fourteen straight division titles, the longest run for any professional sport.

2015
Atlanta loses its 11th consecutive home game, dropping a 6-4 decision to the Mets at Turner Field. The defeat matches a franchise mark established in 1931, when the team played at Braves Field in Boston.

1966 - Ron Perranoski of the Dodgers fans the first six batters he faces and earns a 3 - 2 win over the Mets and Tug McGraw. With the help of 2B Ron Hunt, Mets rookie SS Bud Harrelson picks off Lou Johnson with the hidden ball trick in the 6th.

1997: The Mets tie the game in the 8th and use 23 players before losing to the Expos, 3 - 2, in 15 innings. The loss goes to Joe Crawford, the second time this season he has lost by allowing a run in the 15th.

Don't be too hard on Anthony Kay. Dom Smith is an elite hitter and beat him. Elite hitters do stuff like that. It looked like a Barry Bonds swing, that grand slam.

Smith is elite.

Say what you want about Rojas but if he is behind giving Dom regular playing time at first base and playing Gimenez everyday at SS, he deserves a lot of credit. You see the ESPN list of most exciting players? COnforto, Gimenez, and Smith rated top 3 Mets - Gimenez and Smith are still not even considered regulars in some peoples opinions!

The best part of Dom's grand slam is the fact that it closed down Ernest's Anthony Kay tweets for at least today.
