192. Jay Woolfolk - RHP

Bio:

Height: 6-1

Weight: 200 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Midlothian, VA

A two sport star from the Virginia prep ranks, Woolfolk uses his advanced athleticism to generate low-90s velocity, mixing in a sharp low-80s slider as well. A gridiron standout, Woolfolk is raw on the mound but shows poise and loads of projection within his frame. Should he choose to peruse baseball he could add significant ticks to his velocity in coming years.

Daily Progress -

On the baseball diamond, Woolfolk does it all. He consistently hits upward of 90 mph as a pitcher, and he’s a talented hitter with good power. His combination of speed and arm strength also makes him capable of playing other positions on the field.

Woolfolk’s pitching velocity is remarkable for someone his age, and he also features a slider and changeup in his repertoire, according to a scouting report from Perfect Game. He went 6-0 with a 2.81 ERA and 58 strikeouts for Benedictine as the Cadets went 28-2 and won the 2019 VISAA Division I state championship.

“He’s the only kid we’ve had at Benedictine in my 15 years that has the ability to take over a football game, a basketball game and a baseball game,” Benedictine football coach Greg Lilly told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “He’s an elite athlete that lives to compete.”

PG -

Jay Woolfolk is a 2021 RHP/C, SS with a 6-1 190 lb. frame from Midlothian, VA who attends Benedictine HS. Recorded a 6.89 second 60-yard dash time. Excellent athletic build with plenty of quick-twitch muscle present. Primary righthanded pitcher with a long arm action and extended three-quarters arm slot. Full arm path and works from an open stretch. Lightning quick arm that allows the arm to be on time with fastballs. Topped at 93 mph and held 90-92 mph throughout the delivery. Quick hips and lower half through release. Split changeup was shown but the slider is dynamic. Slider flashed plus when on time and tunneled correctly. Garnered lots of empty swings and the slider is a legitimate out pitch. Righthanded hitter with a flat barrel path and wide base. Very good bat speed and can launch the ball to the pull side. Obvious strength in the swing with some backspin and carry.

Between the Pandemic and his status as a three-star dual purpose football quarterback who is committed to playing both sports at Virginia, Woolfolk hadn’t pitched at a PG event since the summer of 2019.  He threw twice in Fort Myers, showing a very fast and clean arm action that produced a fastball up to 95 mph to go with an upper-70s breaking ball.  His lack of repetitions on the mound shows itself at times but the potential with more innings is obvious.
