PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 7, 2021) – After a week of rain at Clover Park, the St. Lucie Mets erupted on offense in a thorough demolition of the Palm Beach Cardinals on Saturday.
The Mets won the conclusion of Friday’s seven-inning suspended game 13-6. The Mets turned around and won another seven-inning contest 12-0. All told the Mets outscored the Cardinals 25-6, collected 26 hits and went 14 for 30 with runners in scoring position.
In game 1, the Mets entered with an already impressive 4-0 lead with no outs in the first inning. They tacked on three more runs when play resumed on RBI singles by Cesar Berbesi and Branden Fryman and a sac fly by Rowdey Jordan.
The Mets scored four more in the second, including two on another hit by Fryman, to go up 11-1. RBI singles by Fryman and Jordan in the third made it 13-1.
Fryman went 3 for 4 with four RBI from the ninth spot in the order.
Jordan was 2 for 3 with a walk, two RBI and a run in his first pro game (11th round Mississippi State).
Kevin Kendall, who had a two-run single on Friday before the game was suspended, finished 2 for 3 with two RBI and three runs scored in his first pro game (7th round UCLA).
Cesar Berbesi, promoted from the FCL Mets, was 1 for 2 with two walks, two RBI and two runs in his St. Lucie debut.
Oscar Rojas (4-1) pitched 4.0 innings to get the win. He was tagged for a grand slam by LJ Jones in his final inning of work.
In the second seven-inning game on Saturday the Mets scored five runs in the third inning off Cardinals starter Ludwin Jimenez. Jose Colina opened the scoring by ripping a RBI triple. He went on to score on Jimmy Titus’s single to make it 2-0.
Titus went 3 for 4 with four RBI from the ninth spot. He clubbed a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the fifth inning. Titus was a triple shy of the cycle.
Jordan went 2 for 3 with two singles, a walk, two runs and a stolen base from the leadoff spot.
Mets starter David Griffin fired 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He walked three and struck out eight.
Reyson Santos pitched the final 2.0 innings without giving up a hit.
Griffin and Santos combined to induce three inning-ending double plays. The Mets turned five double plays in the two games and have now recorded 77 double plays in 80 games.
The Mets have won three in a row while the Cardinals have dropped 15 straight. Palm Beach has not won a game since beating the Mets 7-0 on July 16th. In that game the Mets broke up a no-hit bid by the Cardinals with one out in the ninth inning when Matt Dyer tripled.
The Mets (43-37) and Cardinals (25-53) conclude their series at Clover Park with a single nine-inning game on Sunday starting at 12:10 p.m.
