PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Sept. 10, 2021) – The Lakeland Flying Tigers stunned the St. Lucie Mets 10-8 in game 1 of Friday's doubleheader at Clover Park before game 2 was postponed by inclement weather (Box Score).
In game 1, the Mets were one strike away from an 8-6 win until the Flying Tigers rallied. Alvaro Gonzalez kept the game going with a two-out single in the seventh. Carlos Irigoyen then drew a walk. Austin Schultz followed with a long three-run homer off Austin Faith to put the Flying Tigers up 9-8. Ben Malgeri then hit another homer to pad the lead.
The loss spoiled a great comeback by the Mets, who scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead, then scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-6.
Jack-Thomas Wold went 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBI. He hit a two-run homer in the second inning, the first of his pro career, to cut Lakeland's early lead to 3-2. Wold hit another two-run homer in the fifth to put the Mets up 6-5.
Kevin Kendall went 2 for 4 with a triple, RBI and two runs.
Warren Saunders was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Cesar Berbesi went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Fans with tickets to Friday's game can exchange those for tickets to any remaining home game this season.
The Mets (55-53) and Flying Tigers (49-61) will play a doubleheader at Clover Park on Saturday. First pitch in game 1 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Game 2 will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Both games will be seven inning contests.
There will be a September 11th 20th anniversary pregame ceremony before the start of game 2. All first responders receive free admission. There will be a fireworks show immediately following game 2.
