Mack - Draft Thoughts: Gavin Cross, Jacob Miller, Jared Poland, Tyce Peterson, Beck Milner

9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

19. Gavin Cross

Outfield, Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech isn’t the kind of school you would expect to produce a potential first round talent, but it’s hard to ignore what Gavin Cross brings to the table. He’s been a menace at the top of the Hokies lineup throughout his career, ending 2020 with a .369 batting average and following that up with another big 2021 campaign. He uses all fields at the plate with big bat speed and has shown some good power to all fields as well. There are those who believe this is the best pure hit tool in the entire class. In the field, he’s manned right field for a majority of the season for the Hokies, where he’s shown off a plus arm. He could find himself as the first Virginia Tech player drafted in the first round since Joe Saunders went 12th overall in 2002.

9-7-21 - MLB.com Top College Prospects -

10. Gavin Cross, OF, Virginia Tech

After batting .345/.415/.621 during the spring, Cross was the U.S. collegiate national team's best hitter in intrasquad play and went 4-for-11 in a three-game series against the U.S. Olympic team. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete, he possesses at least average tools across the board, the best of which are his hitting ability and power from the left side of the plate and a plus arm that enhances his right-field profile.

Former Tennessee High standout Gavin Cross went from a local hero to a national name after playing with the US College Team this summer.

The successful summer mixed with his progress at Virginia Tech in the spring helped the outfielder be named one of Baseball America’s Top 50 College Prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft Monday.

The former Viking came in at No.14 on the list with Cross finishing with a .431 average, 14 RBI’s and four homeruns this summer for the Stars and Stripes. These type of numbers shouldn’t come to a surprise after he hit .345, 11 homers and 35 RBI’s in the spring with the Hokies.

 2021 - VT stat line - 51-G, 203-AB, .345/.415/.621/1.036, 11-HR, 48-K

Mack's spin -

An interesting, growing prospect.

Currently my 7th OFer.

8-23-21 - Perfect Game All-American Classic  @PGAllAmerican

Jacob Miller (OH) threw 4 pitches to close the inning. 93-94 and showed this hammer breaking ball @ 81-82 w/ 2500+ rpm spin

 Mack's spin -

Nice small school starter.

FB 93-95, CB 77-79, SL up to 85

Currently my 20th RHP.

8-22-21-

Mack -  We never see much ink being written about second basemen. Jace Jung is obviously number one here, but could you give us five other second basemen to keep an eye on?

Joe - Surely. Robert Moore at Arkansas, Joe Lampe at Arizona State, Brooks Carlson at Samford, Jacob Blas at Arizona and Jared Poland at Louisville

Mack's spin -

I trust Joe on this one, but I can't find anything else on Poland. There isn't even any 2021 Lousiville stats on him.

8-16-21 - Prospects Live - Pacific Northwest Prospects -

TYCE PETERSON

Infielder

Juanita High School (Kirkland, Washington)

Peterson is a muscled-up infielder with good bat speed and an all-fields approach. He has a ton of strength in his lower half and anchors well to create leverage and some power at the plate. He’s shown a knack for barrel control and it really works gap to gap. As it stands, he’s a hit-over-power prospect though he may mature into more game power as he continues to develop and understand his swing. Peterson runs well and has some bounce in his step too. Ultimately, he’s likely a second baseman or third baseman at the next level. He’s committed to the University of Washington.

 Mack's spin -

I have no other ink on Peterson and it is too early to add him to my board.

8-5-21 - Prospects Live

Beck Milner

Not too often you find a Yale commit, especially from Utah, but Beck Milner had one of the louder showcases for the first group of teams. He’s got a strong and athletic frame to his body and impressed in workouts with a strong arm and a 1.81 pop time. He does have quality bat speed and has natural loft to his swing. He did well in game too, with two hits to his name, including a loud double off a breaking ball from Nazier Mule. The approach can get a tad aggressive, but Milner certainly raised his stock plenty in St. Pete.

Mack's spin -

This also is the first ink I have on this catcher.
