HARTFORD, CT – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (7-16) put the tying runs on base in the ninth but fell to the Hartford Yard Goats 5-3 on Thursday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.
In a game that Hartford never trailed in, the Yard Goats had leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Binghamton though cut the deficit to one in the top of the 5th on a two-run double by Ronny Mauricio. Hartford (13-11) extended the lead back to two with a two-out RBI single from Ezequiel Tovar in the bottom of the seventh.
The Yard Goats got on the board with two in the second inning on an RBI single from Aaron Schunk and a sacrifice fly from Hunter Stovall.
In the fourth, trailing 3-0, Binghamton loaded the bases with one out against Hartford starter Noah Davis on two walks and a hit. Zach Ashford then drew a walk to force home the Ponies first run making it 3-1.
In the ninth, leadoff hitter Luke Ritter reached on a hit by pitch against Stephen Jones. Francisco Alvarez then singled sharply to left. Brett Baty followed with a ground out to second advancing both runners. With runners on second and third and one out, Ronny Mauricio popped out in foul territory. Jeremy Vasquez struck out swinging to end the game.
Davis allowed four hits and three runs over four and two thirds innings in the no-decision. The Hartford bullpen pitched four and a third innings of scoreless relief.
Ponies starter Alex Valverde (0-2) allowed seven hits and four runs over four innings with no walks and five strikeouts in the loss.
The two teams continue their series on Friday night with first pitch at 7:05. Pregame coverage gets underway at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
