The Tom and Mack Recap - May 18, 2022
An 11-4 win - who doesn't love double digit offense...but wait....WHAT?? Mighty Mad Max Scherzer needs an MRI tomorrow on his left side? Ouch, dude. We feel your pain.
Losing both of our Cy Young award winners in the first quarter of the season would be a tad unnerving. (By the way, how the heck did Cy Young ever complete 749 starts, when today's pitchers drop like flies?)
Of course, we now have the Shutdown Man himself, Sir Colin Holderman, Duke of Flushing, who threw a nifty 9th for the Mets and remains unscored upon in the big leagues. May a runner never cross the dish when he pitches, from this time forth and forevermore.
Nimmo thankfully was healthy again, and he, Canha, Lindor, Pete, and McNeil are cooking. Even Dom Smith (hit, walk, RBI) seems to be heating up, as he gloms at bats formerly sucked up by the now 2 for 9 as a Padre Robinson Cano.
And Pat Mazeika is seeking to wrest the starting catching job from Tomas Nido, hitting .273 so far after his call-up. Hey, .273 is All Star caliber for catchers these days.
Scherzer pitched long enough to get the win and improve to 5-1. Hopefully, his malady was caught early and proves to be short-lived.
Edwin Diaz didn't get the save - because you don't need a closer with a 7 run lead. But Seth Lugo wasn't sharp in the 8th, allowing 2 runs to tighten the game to 6-4 before a 5 run "bottom 8" explosion broke the game open.
Down under, Jordan Yamamoto finally surfaced in Brooklyn and surrendered 2 runs in an inning's work. Jaylen Palmer responded to negative Macks Mets commentary and had 2 hits and walk and 2 RBIs in the 5-4 win.
St Lucie soared to 25-10 with a big win. Clobbering Carlos Dominguez went 4 for 5, including his 9th dinger.
But Calvin Ziegler is a certified freak - he fanned 9 more in 4.2 IP, and now has 48 Ks in 29 innings. Nolan Ryan is no doubt impressed.
And 20 year old 3B William Lugo deserves some ink here, as he now has 9 doubles and 13 XBHs in 30 games and is hitting .281. That deserves a shout-out.
Binghamton lost again but Wyatt Young the on base machine had 2 more hits and 2 RBIs, and Francisco the Great had 3 hits and has been on a recent tear, with a 7 game hit streak and 12 hits in that span.
And, not to be overlooked, Mighty Joe Zanghi fanned 4 in 1.1 innings, with 24 in 15 IP this year, dropping his ERA to 0.60. Maybe this guy is a 2022 major leaguer, which would make me very happy. Love those who persevere experiencing the ultimate success.
Syracuse got rained out in Buffalo, and no one shed a tear except Mother Nature, as they remained at 13-23, but they are proud they are not 11-23 like Binghamton.
Pray for Max, and hope he experiences side-splitting laughter when he gets good news tomorrow.

When Max gives up 2 runs on one single, he's "struggling",yet 7 Met runs later they said he was "in command"

Dom said that if there was any team out there that would play him regularly, he would love to play for them. Maybe he should have waited saying that until his BA was over
275. And his power? Last home run was in July 2021.
Mazeika caught Max, had a double in the 4th, and threw out a runner in the 5th
As for our latest pitcher to go down, let's wait this out. Max knows his limitations and probably wisely shut himself down at the first twinge.
As for the minors
Don't look for Syracuse bats to help out here. The highest BA is Nick Plummer at .285, Mark Vientos is hitting .204 and Khalil Lee is hitting fuggetaboutit.

Looks like Max has a slightly strained muscle in his side. Not to worry. He should be ready to go by the beginning of Spring Training 2023. (This is the Mets after all.) *sigh*

Peterson has pitched very, very well. He deserves to be here.
If (heaven forbid) Max goes down for a while, who else can be tapped? Trevor Williams is obvious choice right now. But Szapucki lurks as well.
As Colin Holderman proves, if you want to get to the majors it is far easier as a pitcher. So many of them get hurt. Jobs open up. Plus the short outings of starters requires lots of fresh relievers.
Bassitt went what, about 110 pitches? He is the only really stretched out starter who is healthy. We may see lots of 7 inning outings from him going forward.
My math brain kicked in, and if Ziegler threw 185 innings this year at his current strikeout rate, he'd fan over 300.
I also would think that the current.rotation is Bassett, Cookie, Walker, Williams, and Peterson with Szapucki in the wings.
That is a decent rotation
I dont have the heart to worry about Max right now. Try to win one more against Cards and win Rockies series. Go from there.
Bring your parkas
Last night was a sample of exactly what we need. With pitching beginning to wear from injuries, Mets' bats need to step up. 11 runs is stepping up big time.
Dom, if you want to play every day with some team, just start hitting - helps you and helps the Mets. Take extra BP, study the data, go on a tear.
As for the minors, I'm loving the "Z-men" (no Russian ties). Ziegler is sporting a 1.0 WHIP and a 0.120 BAA. Zenghi has a .080 WHIP and .132 BAA. These are exactly the characteristics you need when you come in from the bullpen with runners on base. Move 'em both up a level and have them prove it against better bats.
I'm writing about minor movement for tomorrow.

They dumped Cano and his at bats - and other guys like Marte miss time. So - Dom may not start every day, but he could certainly get 400 plate appearances.
So, may I suggest, as Dr Evil might, too, and tell you to ZIP IT. Then...HIT IT. You hit more, you play more.

Think it's time for Smith to get more at bats.
Pete's our MVP and is playing for the real MVP award. This is usually our lead into the June swoon but hopefully we change it around this year and in the long run Max and Jake will be stronger for the post season (finger really crossed tight here). With a few articles about what it would take to land Soto 2 question's for you guys: would you do it at all knowing he's going to get $500 million for 10 probably and 2 who would you trade?
