Louisville senior third baseman Ben Metzinger has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Florida State sophomore lefthander Parker Messick earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Messick allowed four hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters in seven innings as the Seminoles blanked visiting Duke 4-0 in Friday night’s ACC series opener. Messick issued just two walks and matched the ACC high for strikeouts in a single game this season.

A native of Plant City, Florida, Messick (4-1) currently ranks second in NCAA Division I with 65 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched this season, one strikeout behind the national leader.

Week 1

Parker Messick, LHP, Florida State (No. 56)

Scouts voted Messick as the top command pitcher in the college class entering the season, and though he admitted he didn’t have the best feel for his secondaries on Friday night, he dominated James Madison, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run, while striking out 11 batters and walking two.

The only damage against Messick came in the second inning, when he left a 90 mph fastball up to catcher Travis Reifsnider, who homered over Florida State’s shallow right field fence. Outside of that pitch, Messick dominated by mixing and matching a solid three-pitch mix. He has an aggressive, competitive demeanor on the mound and came right after batters, getting ahead in counts often with his fastball. Messick started 14 of the 21 batters he faced with strikes.

DRAFT ELIGIBLE COLLEGE PITCHERS WITH UNIQUE RELEASE HEIGHTS

Low Release:

PARKER MESSICK LHP FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY:

Boasting one of the better fastball changeup combinations in the country, Messick checks in at 6-foot, 225-pounds. He creates deception by using an unorthodox delivery as he hides the ball well throughout his delivery. Similar to Hjerpe, he demonstrates great control of the fastball as he consistently fills the zone with strikes, especially up in the zone. In addition to the above average command, his fastball plays well up in the zone due to the IVB, approach angle, and velocity (90-93mph). The ability to successfully elevate his fastball allows him to work north and south with his plus changeup, which has tremendous depth and lateral movement. Messick will look to build off of his strong sophomore campaign and will play his name into early round consideration when evaluating his arsenal and performance as a starter.

2-4-22 - Brett Nevitt @brettpn

Parker Messick getting closer to game form every time he takes the hill. 69% strikes. Sat mostly 91-92 for three innings, was up to 93. Did a good job mixing in all three of his offspeed pitches. Had 4 K’s, just one walk.

Player to know: Parker Messick, LHP

Messick was outstanding as Florida State’s Friday starter in 2021 and became the second player ever to be named ACC pitcher and freshman of the year in the same season. He also stepped up and saw time as DH when Florida State needed help in its lineup and hit .225/.279/.300 with a home run in 40 at-bats. Messick will likely not reprise his role as a two-way player, but he’ll be central to Florida State’s chances in 2022.

Parker Messick

Florida State LHP

Notes:

Ht: 6-0 | Wt: 225 | B-T: L-L

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 21.7

Messick has been a reliable arm for Florida State for two seasons and transitioned from the bullpen to a starting role in 2021 nicely. He posted a 3.10 ERA over 90 innings, with 126 strikeouts (12.6 K/9) and 23 walks (2.3 BB/9), while showing good feel for a four-pitch mix. His fastball gets into the mid 90s at best but sits around 90-91 mph and this summer for Team USA, Messick tossed eight innings and struck out six, with three walks. Scouts view Messick’s stuff as close to average across the board, but he has deception in his delivery and has missed

more bats than his pitch data might suggest—especially with his secondaries. He’s viewed as one of the better command arms in the college class entering the spring.

Parker Messick, LHP Florida State

The reigning ACC pitcher of the year, Messick will assume the role of Friday night ace once again for the pitching-rich Seminoles. The burly lefty was one of the standout underclassmen during the 2021 spring season, and his strong performance earned him inclusion on the Collegiate National Team last summer. After pitching out of the pen and making six appearances during his 2020 freshman campaign, Messick returned and spearheaded the Seminoles rotation in 2021, making 16 starts and producing strong numbers across the board. The lefthander was one of the top performers in the country, showing an ability to miss bats, command the zone and keep the ball in the park—he allowed just six home runs over the course of 2021. While Messick’s stuff might not jump off the page and his build isn’t projectable, he possesses a high level of pitchability, possibly higher than any of the other seven lefthanders we’ve analyzed within this series.

Mechanically, Messick is anything but smooth. It’s a semi-windup that leads into a long arm action with a bit of a dice roll, moving into an inverted-W motion as his throwing elbow rises above his back shoulder right before foot strike. He then delivers the ball from a lower three-quarter slot with a heavy crossfire finish. He has a heavy back leg followthrough as he spins through his operation, often leaving him in poor fielding position. Despite an operation with some warts, he manages to repeat his release point fairly well, and so far it has not hindered his ability to throw strikes.

#56 Parker Messick LHP Florida State Plant City, FL

Messick come at hitters from an unorthodox lefty delivery with a ton of deception. He sits in the low 90s with a very good breaking ball and a fading changeup that can be a bugs bunny nightmare for right handed hitters. There's some effort and funk in his entire operation, of which some scouts fear could result in reliever risk, but Messick's track record of going long innings and filling up the strikezone should help buoy his profile come draft day.

11-16-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Florida State LHP Parker Messick has one of the most impressive changeups in the 2022 class. He backs that up with two distinct breaking balls and a sneaky heater at the top of the zone. He's a scout favorite for this year's MLB Draft.

Messick might be a good lefty pen arm
