 21. Andrew Dutkanych, RHP, Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (IN)

Dutkanych is a polished prep starter who has an outstanding commitment to Vanderbilt. His four-pitch mix includes a fastball that has touched into the mid-90s, as well as a good slider, a curveball, and an improving changeup. One scout said Dutkanych's arsenal may lack a 70-grade offering, but that he shows flashes of having at least one 60. Whatever reservations teams may hold about his abrupt arm action will likely be overshadowed by his track record of throwing strikes and staying healthy. He's expected to come off the board sometime in the middle of round one.

25. Yankees — Andrew Dutkanych, RHP, Brebeuf Jesuit Prep, Indianapolis

Scout’s take: On my board, I had Brandon Barriera, Tristan Smith, Andrew Dutkanych and Jordan Sprinkle here. It’s tough not knowing how some of these guys will pan out with signability. They have a ton of shortstops so I am going with Dutkanych here. He has premium stuff overall and high aptitude. He has a great feel to pitch due to being a persistent student of the game.

Carlos’ take: I’m curious to see how the high school righthander demographic shakes out once we get past Lesko and Porter. Those two seem like the clear 1 and 2 players in that group—beyond that guys like Dutkanych, JR Ritchie and Walter Ford feel pretty close together in my mind.

Notes:

Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 212 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Vanderbilt

Age At Draft: 19.0

Dutkanych dominated in his two-inning outing at Perfect Game National, striking out all six hitters he faced, while running his fastball up to 95 mph and flashing two impressive breaking balls. One is a mid-80s slider with tilt and late break and the other is a mid-70s curveball with more top-to-bottom shape that he threw with depth and landed for strikes. Scouts think the slider is a no-doubt plus offering and it frequently is described as the best breaking ball in the high school class. On top of his spin, Dutkanych showed an improved changeup with USA Baseball’s 18U national team during the fall—where coaches raved about his competitive demeanor on the mound and where he also touched 96-97 mph. Dutkanych doesn’t have the easiest delivery—there is some stabbing action in the back of his arm stroke and a bit of effort in his finish—but there are no red flags with the operation either. He’s committed to Vanderbilt.

Andrew Dutkanych

RHP

Brebeuf Jesuit Prep

Indianapolis, IN

Andrew Dutkanych presents an ideal starting pitcher frame with broad shoulders and tons of projection remaining. He's got an extremely quick arm and the athleticism on the mound is absolutely incredible. Fastball will get up to 96 with serious deception and life. He's got a bulldog mentality and has shown an affinity for pitching on the inner-third of the plate. Dutkanych has a firm slider into the upper 80s, as well as a loopier curveball in the mid-70s. One of the more projectable athletes on the mound in the class. Dutkanych has the talent and upside to become the first prep righty off the board.

29. Tampa Bay Rays

Andrew Dutkanych, RHP, Brebeuf Jesuit Prep

The Tampa Bay Rays never, ever waver. They go for talent that projects to stick up the middle of the field, anchored by solid hit tools and athleticism. If not that, the occasional high-upside prep arm, a la Nick Bitsko, draws them in. With such a deep year for prep pitching, it would make sense Rob Metzler go that route. Dutkanych has a bulldog mentality and pitches to both sides of the plate with a fastball that touches 96 right now. He’s got a hard, firm slider in the upper-80s and a loopier curveball that projects well. Any other year, he may be a unanimous top-three prep arm in the class, but given the depth and talent at the top of this class, landing such a talent at the end of the first round would be a huge win for Tampa.

28. Houston Astros | Andrew Dutkanych IV, RHP, Brebeuf Jesuit Academy (Ind.)

Dutkanych is the top prep arm to come out of Indiana in recent memory as his combination of explosive arsenal along with confidence on the mound produced big results over the summer. He’s got three pitches that will flash plus in a fastball, slider, and curveball and the amount of strikes he throws coupled with his low release height make his fastball play very well at the top of the zone. He’ll have a choice between pro ball and Vanderbilt, but there’s no doubting the stuff here. -JG

46. Andrew Dutkanych

Position: Right Handed Pitcher

School: Brebuf Jesuit Prep (IN)

Commitment: Vanderbilt

The overall collection of pitches is drool-worthy. His fastball will sit in the 93-96 range during shorter outings and as far as I can tell it rarely ever drops below 91. The pitch features excellent backspin and life up in the strike zone. It’s an easy plus grade pitch with further improvement to his command. As it stands, it’s a bit more hittable than you’d expect given the velocity and shape. Dutkanych compliments his fastball with three secondary pitches, the best of which is a hard slider. It’s a power pitch with late tilt and mid-to-upper 80s velocity. His curveball is right around average in the upper 70s and will show big depth through the strike zone. His changeup is a low 80s pitch that has occasional late fading action and he can sell it well with the way he maintains fastball arm speed. It’s a solid mix overall, and all four of his offerings sit in distinct velocity bands. There’s a lot to dream on here and a lot of variance in terms of final outcomes. Dutkanych has 1st round potential and will need to be selected early enough for him to pass up on a Vanderbilt commitment.

Indianapolis, IN Andrew Dutkanych presents an ideal starting pitcher frame with broad shoulders and tons of projection remaining. He's got an extremely quick arm and the athleticism on the mound is absolutely incredible. Fastball with get up to 96 with serious intent. Projects to throw very hard. Dutkanych has a firm slider into the upper 80s, as well as a loopier curveball in the mid-70s. One of the more projectable athletes on the mound in the class. Significant upside.

10-13-21 - BPJ -

Andrew Dutkanych, a senior at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis, is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-handed pitcher who throws a four-seam fastball, slider, curveball and changeup from a high arm slot and athletic delivery.

He is a prototypical starting pitcher, possessing a repeatable delivery and a quality mix of pitches. His fastball hits 96 mph and features plenty of riding action. Due to that movement, his fastball plays better out of the zone, which is where it generates the most swings and misses. He typically throws his fastball high in the zone.

Dutkanych has two notable breaking pitches. His slider is a firm pitch that sits in the high-80s and draws comparisons to a cutter. His curveball features plenty of movement, resembling 12-to-6 action, and generates swings and misses.

8-8-21 - BA  -

Andrew Dutkanych, RHP (Indiana)

Dutkanych is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound righthander who dominated in his outing at Perfect Game National, striking out six straight batters in two innings. He wasn’t quite as overpowering at East Coast Pro a few weeks later, with more scattered strikes and a few hard hit balls against him, but he showed impressive stuff nonetheless and struck out five batters over three frames.

Dutkanych touched 95 mph at PG National and then touched 96 a few weeks later at East Coast Pro and sat in the 92-94 mph range in both events. He shows two distinct breaking balls, one a mid-80s slider and the other an upper-70s curveball. The slider seemed to be the better swing-and-miss offering for Dutkanych in both outings, though he throws both pitches with high spin rates in the 2400-2600 rpm range.

Andrew Dutkanych IV

Making the trip from Indiana, Dutkanych walked into Tropicana Field and produced one of the best pitching performances of the week. Vanderbilt commit flashed an advanced four pitch mix led by a plus fastball that sat 92-95 with a ton of run. Slider and changeup both flashed above average in the low to mid 80s and a tight hammer curveball in the 70s. Dutkanych was able to pull a Caden Dana and struck out 6 in his two inning outing. He was able to pick up at least one K with each of his pitches. Dutkanych gives you Andrew Painter vibes being a big bodied RHP with elite body control and a deep pitch mix. Really good chance he could be a name in first round talks next summer.
