Tom Brennan and Mack Ade - Mets Recap

It’s Mets Recap Time once again, boys and girls.

Snow removed, play ball.

Game 1, Senor Cookie was a scrumptious winning dessert.

Luis Guillorme (.323) is hurtling after a batting title. Pat Mazeika had 2 RBIs and wants the NL RBI crown.

With those two in the lineup, the Big Red Machine looks like a little black jalopy by comparison.

Good pen, good 5-1 win. And 13 hits to inflate hitter averages.

Game 2?  Brandon Nimmo got nailed to start the game, trying to stretch a single to a double.  Game-altering. Three hits and no runs in inning 1, and then the back end Mets pitching caved in the cold, thin Rockies air.  Williams, Medina and Shreve allowed 11 runs in the first 6 innings.  Down 11-3 in the 8th, one of you can let me know tomorrow how game 2 finished up.

Oh...

Braves beat Marlins, Phillies lose to the Dodgers.

NOTHING COULD BE FINER THAN GAMES DOWN IN THE MINORS:

SYRACUSE was getting crushed, then scored 11 runs on 7 hits late in the game…and lost 12-11 anyway.

BINGHAMTON was fighting tonight. Wyatt Young hitting yet again, with 2 knocks. 4-4 late in the game, and Alvarez lined a single off Wlll Brennan (no relation). They won in 11, 5-4.

Montes de Oca fanned 4 in 2 scoreless innings, and Trey Cobb pitches well again in relief, too.  Willie Taveras tossed a scoreless 11th for the win.

Jake Mangum has 60 at bats in April and 60 more in May. 12 hits in April, 22 in May. I can’t wait for June to see if the progression continues to 32 for 60.

ST LUCIE was not hitting tonight, but lefty reliever Nate Lavender has been nothing but great since turning pro. 21 pro innings, 0.83 ERA, 4-1, 36 Ks. My favorite Mets color.

Game suspended in the 7th, down 4-0.

BROOKLYN getting trounced with utterly anemic offense again. 10-0 deficit in the 8th, that ends my coverage. Lost 12-2 when I checked back.

Their offense offends me. Please don’t take offense when I say that.

My thoughts...

- Jacob Resnick wrote about the heads turning to watch SP Calvin Zeigler throw his multi-pitch arsenal for St. Lucie

I was late on this guy and tell you all never to judge a pitcher by his ERA at this level.

Lower A ball is for development only.

What you need to do is focus on the 48 strikeouts produced in only 29 innings.

And he's only 19.

The Mets might want to keep him in Florida this season and consider bumping to Brooklyn for his sophomore season.

- In 1981, today was the day that Yale played St. John's

The Johnnie's Frank Viola put up 8K thru 11 innings but Yale's Ron Darling had a no hitter thru 11 innings and struck out 16.

Many consider this the best college game ever.

- Texas 1B Ivan Melendez (the "Hispanic Titanic ") now has 28 home runs.

-In other draft news, LSU 3B Cade Doughty dislocated his shoulder in game and is probably lost for the CWS run..

- It's great to see that the Mets and Chris Bassett agreed to an $8.8mil contract for 2022 and a mutual option of $18mil for 2023. Yes. It does have a buyout but this guy loves being on this team and Mets may even love him more.

Let's hope this is a start for a lasting relationship.

- RHP Joe Zanghi was promoted from Binghamton to Syracuse.

Zanghi has been lights out for a very bad B-Mets team, posting a 0.60 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in 15.1 relief innings. He also has a 14.40 K/9 ratio

Keep an eye on this 27 year old.

- Game 1

Starling Marte's first swing today was for his grandmother.

Carlos Carrasco stayed busy all day on the mound but giving up only one run in 5.1 was the perfect way of starting off this series. In Coors Field? That's like a no hitter.

I feel sorry for Luis Guillorme. This guy is stuck on a team that has both Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor on it. He deserves to play every day but doesn't bitch to reporters (what?) and just goes out and does the job he is asked to do.

Boy, Seth Lugo pulled that 2 innings out of his arse. Great call by Buck saving Diaz for night game or beyond.

Rockies had scored 2 runs or. more for all home games in the past 2 years. Until now.

31 game stint update:

One down.

1-0

Game 2 -

The fragility of the rotation reared its ugly head tonight.when the Trevor Williams experience didn't turn out to be the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I guess this was bound to happen. Sure I guess it was only two balls dished up for a couple of two run homers, but all they could squeeze out of Williams was four innings and it did set the tone for the game.

Things went downhill from there with Medina and Schreve giving up seven runs in one inning.

Only highlights were scoreless innings by Reed and Rodriguez, and two hits each from Pete and JD.

On to Sunday

31 game stretch results

2 down

1-1

Re:

Montas - should we consider this guy a prospect going forward?

Magnum -other than being a great private investigator, I think we made a mistake thinking he would be anything more than a filler.piece.

Tom Brennan said...

Ziegler….move him as fast as his maturity and ability allow.

Mangum…I think he can be an outfield Guillorme

Montes de Oca…he will be in theMets bullpen within a few months. Control, control, control.

They CANNOT rely on marginal pitching. Every year, that is what kills the Mets.

Tom Brennan said...

Ivan the Great…but only 3 of those 28 homers would carry out of Citifield. A funeral home is now on site for all of the crushed balls that die on the warning track.

The.pen.only has enough.proven talent.for one game a day

Tom Brennan said...

That is a fair statement.

Sorry but who made the decision that replacing Loop with Shreve was a good idea? Also Mr. Superstar got a hit!! in the DHer a sterling (not Marte) 1 for 9 as we all think about "Oh my God" NINE more years as there's no way to sugar coat this much longer. Is there a reason Luis G. is not playing almost everyday? With all the love that's been laid on Buck he has to explain why EE get's more playing time than super Luis who seems to do something every game to help the team. Considering every team needs 5 to 6 pitchers every night how do you not wear out a BP? We need at least a 27 man roster.

Gary Seagren said...

With all the talk about the Nats making Soto available what's your thoughts on whether we should make an offer and what would you give up? Also who would you give up for Montas?

Gary Seagren said...

By the way I love this Tom and Mack Mets recap thing.

Mack Ade said...

Every team needs a Guillorme.

You might as well come along for.tje Lindor ride.

Stat wise, one the m top NL shortstpps

Notice our last four losses were when a lefty started against us.

Mack Ade said...

I would offer:

JD or Dom (pick one)
Zaghi
Mauricio

Thanks Gary

Tom is a genius.

Interesting fact

Tom Brennan said...

Gary, I think since the trade, if you rank batting averages, you get
1) Guillorme
2) Gimenez
3) Rosario
4) Lindor

Dude needs to produce more hits.

Gary Seagren said...

He needs to go to the McNeil/Nimmo school of hitting choke up and make contact. I'll give up the HR's for at least a .280 BA AND .350 OBP.

Tom Brennan said...

Gary, if McNeil swung for the fences, hedhit .250 - .260. I think hitting a 440 foot homer is intoxicating. But it cannot cause you to just swing away.” When you do, most guys hit .230.

Mack Ade said...

I never swung for the fences.

And never had one homer. Came close hitting top of wall but didn't go over.

I will always remember that. I barreled that up so well that I never even felt it when the bat hit the ball.

But I was a consistent .350+ leadoff hitter

Guillorme has been a valuable piece for the Mets for years. This year may be his best. He is a great infielder and has shown success with the bat in spurts - this year a long spurt.
Escobar impressed me with his defense from the very beginning. I didn't care about him slumping because everyone else was hitting. Now I'm getting weary of it - still not hitting and the defense has slumped a little. Guillorme is playing better right now at the bat and in the field - he should get >50% of the starts at 3B.

I really dig the Tom and Mack show, or is it the Mack and Tom show...

Tom Brennan said...

Mack, you sound like you were your generation's...Luis Guillorme. My brother Steve, though - he would have struck you out. He struck everyone out. Sadly for him, his pitch count was about 500 pitches per week. No one told him that was a bad idea. He found out the hard way.
